There's always an offer for a player of that caliber.

WRONG. It has happened; you are faced with a weak offer or taking the pick. If you believe in your draft board then follow it; .

The Cowboys must be the first team in NFL history to have:

-Four first round picks on the offensive line (Smith, Martin, T-Fred, Cooper) and a would-be fifth (Collins), and...
-Three running backs with 1,000 yard seasons on their resume (Zeke, Alf, McFadden).

McClay (and every other FO person) would have kicked their sister to draft Cooper and Warmack over Frederick that year.

Everyone was wrong, including us.
I know how the team felt about Cooper at the time and they indeed would have rather had him than T Fred. However, I don't recall hearing how they felt about Warmack. I remember that they preferred Cooper of those two but that doesn't mean they didn't like Warmack.

If he had lazy issues in college then that's likely one reason why they liked Cooper better and could have dropped him much lower on their board than we might realize.

I'm not saying you're wrong because you usually know your stuff... but I never remember hearing from the franchise that they liked Warmack (like I do remember with Coop).

All I know is that if you have an OL (particularly a C) who is that freaking smart and the only real problem with him is his 40 time... you need to try to get that guy on your team.

It is what's between Frederick's ears that makes him so good and, in large part, what makes the Dallas OL so good. He's vital to the success of the whole line... and so the whole offense.

One of the best picks in years.

really. On you starting 22 which position outside of QB has the least to do with your 40 time?

To be fair though, his bench press numbers weren't impressive either... but that is in large part because of how Wisconsin trains their OL. They don't put a lot of stock in bench. They do more core strength stuff... and that is where Travis is so strong. You never, ever see him get pushed back in the pocket, which is sooo vital to the QB.

Near perfect center as far as I'm concerned. Love that guy.

40 time can be so misleading. To me they ought to make them run the 40 in full pads. THEN take notice of it.
I've wondered if they should do that before because some guys just carry their pads well and some don't. I don't think it is critical for OL but positions where speed does matter... I'd like to see them in pads.

Guys like Anquan Boldin and Terrell Suggs just carry their pads well but they sucked big time at the combine.

I agree I think some players play closer to their 40 times padded then others. My HS coach believed in padded 40 time differential to guage speed. I ran a 4.8 40 in shorts and ran a 4.85 40 fully padded and in cleats.

That's why I hate drafting for need. You end up missing out on transcendent players in your organization. Frederick already looks like the best center in Cowboys history. Better than Stepnoski, Fitzgerald, Shiver (lol)....

But didn't we draft for need when we drafted Fredericks? I'm not sure but I just know that our center position was a major weakness for years prior to us drafting him.

This happens at many posistions. Some wanted us to trade up for a qb. Others used the example that there were many very good and one great starters in the league that weren't first round picks.

Evaluating talent based on college is a crap shoot.
Carharris---- you nailed it....."Evaluating talent based on college is a crap shoot"....hit and miss...the last few drafts we have hit more than missed

Only because we traded back after other players went off the board.

He was the "consolation" pick. That was great fortune for us.

We clearly chose Tyron due to need. It is not always the wrong thing to do just as its not always the right thing to do BPA only. Matt Millen in Detroit was a fanatical BPA believer. Did not work too well.
