Well, if removing PacMan, TO, Tank Johnson, Roy Williams isn't enough of a hint that the coaching and management IS serious about changing things up on this team, moves like considering cutting ties with Ellis certainly have to start making one think that "yep, for good or ill this season, the team is shaking things up".
Watching the replays of Hard Knocks from last season (I know the editting can paint pretty much any picture they want, but....) what was the leadership of this football team. Who the were the outspoken, loud, brash, guys, well a bunch of them were on the top line of this post, even Roy Williams.
This team is undergoing SIGNIFICANT change. Add letting Canty go, and trading (basically cutting salary) CB Henry and there is some major change at the starting positions and the "leadership" approach to this team.
Tank Johnson is hard to watch on Hard Knocks. He looked so good in camp early (and the news reports raved too about his play and leadership). He is a prototypical body type and seemed to have the drive early, but 1/2 way through season and onward he disappeared. Mental toughness? TO could still take over a game, but also seemed self-absorbed and pouty, even on his play on the field, which could be inconsistent with the wrong or poor route runs and alligator arming it at time or going down out of bounds pretty quickly, not to mention drops. Pac Man was Pac Man. These guys lacked the discipline and long term mental toughness, it seemed, and coaching/management is cutting it out of the team.
Now we perennial whiner Ellis, who plays well on the field, but what kind of leadership does this guy truly bring. A guy so worried about his bank account and job security would not inspire me much on the field despite his veteran savy, effort, and speach making. Sorry buddy, but you undermine yourself by sounding stupid.
At some point, if you pay guys 6-7 million, you expect the WHOLE package, and not just talent, big play ability, etc. Aikman, Irvin, Smith, they had the whole package or at least when in triplet form had it. There was just some little factors lacking in the guys that got cut, they just didn't bring enough.
You can't lead your team in a positive direction by attacking your QB, your o-co-ordinator, your TE, etc.
Now Romo is defacto leader, and has to put away a bit of the "aw shucks, grinning" (which is hard because that is his personality, and Aikman was a pretty serious, straight shooter guy), but Romo has to try and change a bit or focus on "perfection" and discipline and high standards, etc.
The makeup of this team is changing. The "make it rain guys" will not be leading this team this year. If Hard Knocks was on this year it sure would look different (probably boring to watch) but I imagine the look would be darn different.
It might take more than one season to see the results (step back to make step forward) but I think it gives the team a better chance to make strides in playoffs for longer term.
