No, "I can't throw the ball and catch the ball" is a direct shot at your QB.

That is just Hines being defensive, especially considering Roth had already won one SB without a "tall WR"

Doesn't matter, the Steelers have a strong organization, team and coach in place that quickly puts the focus back on the field.

We have reality TV shows.

rofl...

none of these are shots at all.

"I don't hear Tom Brady or Peyton Manning asking for that."

"I don't know, whatever he says. I have no idea. To me, it's a rare combination of receivers out there who are good and tall. We won a Super Bowl, we didn't have a tall receiver then. I don't see Tom Brady caring about who's tall or not. He got Randy this year, but he did it before without him.''

"To me, I have enough problems to worry about than what Ben wants -- I can't give him the contract. He wants a tall receiver? Why did we draft Santonio [Holmes]?"

or here's more team unity...

He also did not buy Roethlisberger's opinion that because the 6-5 quarterback was throwing down to his smaller receivers, they got "killed" on occasion reaching up for passes. Roethlisberger said he'd like to throw to someone tall who is on his plane.

"A lot of that has to do with technique,'' Ward said. "If he wants to say it's height or whatever or he didn't see me -- I've caught 719 balls. I don't think me being short had anything to do with catching those balls.

"That's his opinion. Even with Plax and Kordell [Stewart], I would be wide open in the red zone, but people get enamored of tall receivers -- 'I have to throw it to him, throw it to him.' Tom Brady looks at coverage. Me, I'd take a guy who will scratch and claw and do anything to get the ball rather than go with height."

I haven't really even read this thread, but work ethic does matter quite a bit. Not only for getting in shape, being sharp and understanding your opponent (studying film), but also for building confidence. If you feel like you've worked harder than the other guy you're faced up with, then that gives you an edge.

Being a choir boy doesn't matter and none of it matters if you don't meet the pre-requisites for physical talent.

And this effected the team how? Dude you are so reaching you aren't looking so bright. Have a great night.

bright? talking about character and being clueless about the team in question is what makes one look plain stupid.

it took me about 5 mins of internet research to dig this up.

unless of course you now want to argue breaking down your g'fs door and slapping her is a character move?

didn't effect the team?? so then character doesn't matter?

in your waffles you have lost me.

might as well just say character only matters if you are the cowboys and lose and make me feel bad so i vent with illogical arguments that have no basis in reality.

Looks to me like Hines being totally defensive about an offhand comment.

There is nothing there that implies that Ben is not a good QB, only that he is asking for something that Ward doesn't think he needs.

What part of that do you think is the shot at Ben? Because he compares him to the 2 best QBs in the game?

Grasping at straws. Oh noes, Ben doesn't have the 'technique' to throw to smaller WRs. He must be terrible! Again, sounds like Hines on the defensive

And again, more importantly the Steelers have the organization and locker room in place that something like this comes and goes, not festering for months and showing up in anonymous leaks to reporters or meetings to coordinators. This wasn't some months long feud between these two, with various parts of the locker room taking sides with Ward or Ben. It was out and it was gone. That's the point.

I think the character being referred to here is not necessarily taking team attendance at church on Sundays, but who is spending that extra time in the film and weight room. Those who are more concerned how they can improve their technique even slightly to get even an ounce more of an edge on Sunday than what time tomorrow they are appearing on ESPN.

And no, I'm not saying players shouldn't have a life. But we seem to have too many to whom football is that other thing they have to do between the fun stuff.

Hey genius, you had to google search (admitedly) to come up with these awful, awful things.
Do people have to google the Cowboys to find minor things or do people like owens make them well known in interview's?

Get real man.

He said a number of times the best QB's dont ask for that, implying quite clearly, Ben R wasn't as good as them. He stated good QBs read coverage not worry about how tall a WR is....

And it died because the media didn't ask every player on the team about it like they do in Dallas. ESPN didn't have guys stationed outside Ben R or Hines' houses. Pittsburgh after all is a small market team.

Again, anyone who believes T.O. could say that without starting world war 4 is absolutely crazy.

A guy being that defensive and then insulting his QB with offhand remarks is an issue. Same as T.O. saying derogatory things would be an issue.

This wasn't about the Pitt organization it was about the media letting it go, something they NEVER do here. Here the weight of Tony Romo's girlfriend is national news for cripes sake and good grief don't let him go play a round of golf.

Who said it wouldn't? Hines has said one thing in how many years? owens says stupid stuff weekly. Hines has been kicked off zero teams.owens........

Of course owens gets bigger publicity for stupid comments, he asks for it.

And why do you think that happens?

Do you think they pulled Owen's name out of a hat and said "Let's follow this guy around for the next 10 years and blow everything he says way out of proportion!"

Furthermore, do you think TO would really let it sink out of the media? He loves the drama as much as Jerry, his teammates have come out and said so.

That's not character, that is work ethic as she describes. I am guessing she did a little better in her English classes than you did.

There is no way Santonio Holmes getting caught with 3 roaches, Ward freaking out because Ben R said he wants a tall WR or Harrison beating his girlfriend is a sign of good character regardless of how much film they watch.

If you mean we need people to have a great work ethic than I wholeheartedly agree but this Stellers team is a crappy example of winning with Character.

brainiac, football players don't do interviews to describe beating their girlfriend or how they ride dirty smoking weed.

and guess what... the Ward stuff is FROM INTERVIEWS!!!!

good lord. you have made zero points in this thread. another 20 posts and maybe you can sneak one in somewhere.

Character is not solely defined by one's morals. Morals are completely subjective anyway.

Character when applied to a sports team often relates to work ethic and ability to put one's individual goals behind those of the team. It is very commonly used that way, even if you want to twist it for your own use.

My English grades were just fine, thank you. Perhaps you need to work on yours.

Why do they do it to Romo or Witten???
Why is Wade now super scrutinized?

Even persona-non-grata Patrick Crayton gets airtime because he is a Cowboy.

T.O. loves the spotlight and he is in the right place for it because it never shuts off here.

It isn't just T.O. If ANY Cowboys WR says what Hines did it would have been a huge deal.

Oh bull.

Antonio Bryant threw a jersey at his head coach a couple of years ago and it barely made a blip outside of the local media. If TO did that it would be in 12 inch headlines across the nation.

And not because he's a Cowboy, because he is a career prick who happens to be on the Cowboys now.

Although I'll concede Romo dating pop stars has a lot to do with it too, he has also put himself in a position where his image goes beyond the team.

That isn't morals... it is character.

Slapping one's girlfriend isn't a moral question unless you are truly an idiot in which case you'd need more help then with your English grades. FWIW I have a B.A. in English so I did just fine.

Three cases I presented... 1 a guy breaking the law during the season that resulted in a game suspension and could have resulted in entering the League's substance abuse program, 1 a guy insulting his QB which is hardly putting team first, and 1 a guy assaulting his girlfriend which is just plain wrong period on any level.

Are you seriously that ******** or unaware?

Bryant's jersey tossing was HUGE news. It followed him and he even still addresses it to this day. If it was squelched at all it was Big Bill wouldn't even discuss it and ofrbid any one on the team from commenting on it.

Bryant was actually out of football for a good while because of this stuff.

See how many hits this gets you...

I guess Larry Fitzgerald has no character. Or Kurt Warner.

What losers.

Kudos to those two. Very admirable performances.

Too bad Kurt threw that INT... too bad they couldnt tackle the guy for 100 yards.

Thats the way the cookie crumbles.

Both team took huge punches and came back from them. Punches the Cowboys would have been knocked out from. Congrats to the Steelers. You aren't America's team but you are the best team. It would be awesome to see what character would emerge if we cut the bad apples of the Cowboy bunch. I go down with the Cowboy ship all day every time but I am damn jealous right now.

Sickening...but true. I am so disgusted with what heartless/gutless chumps the Dallas Cowboys have become that I am almost happy Pitt won, I almost want to root against the franchise i grew up rooting for. JFE nailed it when she called us the Paris Hilton of the NFL. That is EXACTLY what we are, and the steelers are the antithesis of that...a hard nosed accountable physical "team"...who subvert their own personal desires to that of their teams goals.

F our team, F them. I dont want anything to do with them until TO is gone, Wade is gone, Romo is either gone or being ridden hard by a coach (hopefully Holmgrem), and Discipline/Character rule again in Dallas.

I know...fat chance when you got the guy at the top we got. Jerry is smart, no doubt about it. But all the "smarts" and money in the world cant buy class or character. He has never had it, and he never will. As long as he is at the head of our team, we wont forge a winning ethos, we will continue to have an excuse driven culture.

Go Mavs, or Frogs I guess, b/c seeing Pitt win the way the did brings into focus so sharply why I now HATE our team.
