Chest thumpin' time: Wimbley was the one we should have drafted.

To start, by using that 4th rounder who is about to be cut.

That would have been an amazing feat considering we didn't have it until we traded down in the second round.

Preseason???

We didn't have a 4th at the time to trade up???

3 years before we evaluate draft picks???

uh, exactly how could we have drafted Wimbley? He was picked BEFORE us

TBC, you're lucky they don't have a limit on knuckle-headed threads, or you would have been outa here a long time ago.

Please allow me to enlighten you on a few football basics:

  • Wimbley is a DeMarcus Ware clone. I swear, I have never seen two players who were so much alike their rookie seasons--so far. I know this because I live in NE Ohio, so I get to see all of the Brown's games. I really love to watch him play because he is a difference maker, he forces fumbles, and the Browns are my "other" team.
  • Why in the world would you want to draft another player just like Ware to compliment him? You don't. Ware plays on the "weak" side, named such because the TE usually plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage, making Ware's side "weak". Therefore, you would want a player who is a little stouter, and used to playing face up against the TE, not someone who is much better in "space" to play that position.
  • Wimbley was basically drafted with the 11th pick. The Browns took him with the 12th because they stole a 6th rd. pick from the Ravens to move down one spot, knowing they had decided way back 2 months earlier that Wimbley was their man. Therefore, since Cleveland wouldn't have traded down knowing they would lose Wimbley, so the Cowboys would have had to trade up at least 8 spots in the draft in order to pick ahead of the Browns. This would have taken 400 points on the Trade Value Chart, or basically their 2nd rd. pick. No way in the world does BP even contemplate such a move when his heart was set on Carp for weeks anyway.

2 sacks for Wimbley in the preseason.

0 for Carpenter or Lawson.

Not to say both can't improve and show some stuff later down the road, but you get the drift. I've already seen threads from respected Zone members talkin' about how Carpenter hasn't shown anything yet.

So for all you folks who were on board the Wimbley bandwagon (I joined very, very late, was all Lawson until the last week), the Zone salutes you. You should join the Cowboys as a consultant. ;)

Can't help but think of that one guy who always had that sig of Wimbley in peak physical shape and the line "good bye my love." Imagine how much catastrophe this defense would wreck with Ware and Wimbley, Canty and Spears for years to come. :)

Hate to be a jerk, but "duh".

Listen to Jerry and Bill after the draft. Wimbley was who they wanted. Carp was the second choice and Lawson third.

Unfortunately, he went 6 spots before Dallas picked and anyone paying attention leading up to the draft could see that he was going to be gone before Dallas picked anyway.

This part really needs emphasis. We would have had to burn both a 1st and 2nd round pick to even have a chance to get him. A LB. No way does that happen, for a QB or a WR maybe, but not a LB.

Personally, I don't like moving up for anyone in the 1st unless it's a QB, WR or RB. It's just too expensive.

It's still way to early to label Carp either a success or bust. We're so loaded with talent at LB that he doesn't have as much opportunity to shine since he's playing with the second team, and as others have said he's currently out of position.

This reminds me of all the Ware naysayers when Merriman was looking good early on last year.

Well, if you read the thread, you'll notice that:

1) I meant to preface the trade up scenario, and forgot to include it in the original post thus starting the orgy of folks trying to look smart.

2) If you read the post above, Bill and Jerry WANTED Wimbley first. This whole argument from folks who don't understand the game and think the Cowboys would rue the day they drafted 2 DeMarcus Wares makes absolutely no sense and was disproven in the predraft debates. I don't understand you folks who think Ware is too small to have a clone on the other side. Ware is NOT a small guy. He bullrushes offensive tackles regularly. Sure, he needed some weight coming out of college, just like every 3-4 defensive player, INCLUDING Bobby Carpenter, but the fact is if we had Wimbley, he would probably be starting with Ware for the next ten years. And if we have to start this whole useless strongside argument when Ware was staying on the same side a lot last year regardless of where the TE was, then I just don't feel like trying to spread the info. I guess Ware can handle offensive tackles, but not tightends. If anything, with today's tight ends who basically only have a biscuit separating them from wide receiver (as Bill would put it), you want the smaller guy who will matchup with him and have to cover the Shockeys, Cooleys, Wittens and such.

We'll approach this topic late in the season when Wimbley has 10 sacks and Carpenter is struggling to get just a few, and you folks can bust out your "I told ya so" stuff. :)

what's the title on this little thread here? hmmmm...;)

and wether or not Carpenter has as many sacks as Wimbley is a moot point unless you also want to take in account what we would have had to give up to move up in the draft to pick him. if you do that...Wimbley isn't worth it. maybe he would have if he had been there at 18, but he wasn't...so why bother arguing over such conjecture?

Carpenter had 3 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 pass deflection, and 1 QB pressure in saturdays game. what more could you ask for in a rookies 3rd game? especially on our loaded linebacking corps? do you people even watch the games? or do you let the commentators and the reporters do it for you?

Nothing saying he can't learn the position and be a late bloomer. That includes several years from now like Bradie James. Just saying, Wimbley looks like the biggest rookie impact.

So you're still standing by your position that we should have traded our 2nd round pick to move up to get him... Essentially Carp & Fasano for Wimbley??

Remember when you're in the drafting business that you have different scenarios depending on what is available when you pick. Sure BP and JJ may have had Wimbley rated 1st ahead of Carp. That doesn't mean they should have automatically traded up to get him. If they feel he's leaps and bounds better and they have to have him, then ok. I have a feeling though that Carp wasn't rated that much below Wimbley, not enough to give up BP's second TE and our plans for a 2 TE offense this season.

And I doubt they're second guessing that assessment based on the fact that Wimbley has 2 sacks in preseason.
