Chris Covington thoughts

A few head scratchers. Was shocked that we cut BO and Jackson. Only 2 RB? I am sure one will clear waivers.
They only carry 2 on game day. One if not both will clear waivers and if not there will be plenty rbs who do. Austin and olawale can take a couple snaps if someone goes down during game. Let's face it, if it's Zeke that goes down it want matter anyway as neither were all that good!

C'mon people, he was Nate Sudfeld's backup qb his freshman year of college. He's indispensable, and obviously the emergency qb when Dak and Rush get hurt on game day!

This really says it all. They fall in love with players and draft them too high and keep them on the roster after they don’t do anything to earn it. Meanwhile a player like Lenoir busted his tail all offseason and showed he can be a legitimate NFL WR. Forget the punt return stuff. He would never be a PR and was only there so Austin or Beasley didn’t get hurt. Lenoir showed the work ethic and improvement that should be what defines RKG. Not keeping the best 53 you can is not a recipe to winning in th NFL. Lenoir earned a spot over Covington, Brown, and a few others.
A 6th round is too high?

Covington did play special teams in the last two preseason games. His responsibilities slowly increased with each preseason game. I think he was out of the first game due to a minor injury. He barely played in the second game. In the third game (Arizona) he had two assists and one special teams tackle. He started the fourth game (Houston) and had four tackles and one special teams assist.
He missed with bronchitis that developed into pneumonia.

What unique talent did Lenior bring to the table? Speed....size...special teams ability?

Oh yeah, fans never fall in love with players and want to keep them. The fact you're fighting for a guy who didnt do much either, hasn't been claimed by another team last off-season, etc...kinda shows it goes both ways.

So a player needs unique talent now? Would you like to go over the entire roster with that criteria?
What Lenoir did bring to the table was he busted his *** and remade himself into a player that had a great camp, made some very nice catches, and was much improved with his arrow pointing up. Those are the player I want in the backup roles. Players that are actually working hard to improve themselves. Lenoir showed he could play in the league and can still get better. Has Brown shown anything close to that? He made th club from the tub which you aren’t supposed to be able to do in the NFL unless you are a star.

Gotta admit I was surprised that Covington was kept as a 7th LB rather then trying to get him to the PS. I'm guessing they see him on the active 45 and playing special teams.

But something about him I really like as a developmental player learning under Sean Lee, who is probably the best defensive player/coach in the NFL. To play with Sean Lee is a gift to any LBer, especially one who started college football as a QB.

But the thing about Covington is he looks the part. I was actually at a bar when they played their last pre-season game. I was recording it at home and trying not to watch so as not to piss the wife off. I stopped and looked up and saw a LBer making a play and thought "who is that?! I like his fire, the way he moves, he looks like a stud." It was Covington. Go ahead and make fun for my uninformed analysis, but I've got a hunch he might surprise all of us. They're obviously looking a year or two down the road with him. In the meantime, I predict some highlight reel hits from him on special teams.

I have heard ans read a couple places who mentioned how much the staff likes him.

I simply think he earned a spot with his work ethic and play on the field moreso than a few that they kept instead.

When you're a 5th or 6th receiver, you need to have a trait. What was Lenior's?

If you really think a player should be kept on a roster for "busting his butt," you're naive.

I'm guessing you think Jesse Holley should still be on this roster based on his hard work and feel good story.

Noah Brown brings size and ability to serve as a superior blocker at the WR position. He's also proven he can play at the NFL level, which Lenior hasn't shown yet, so your argument by your own standard fails.

unique talent is desired over try hard types.
besides, lenoir was not picked up as one would have expected, so he can practice on the ps and be an option for next year
brown will likely go on the ir, and we could choose to add lenoir back on if we should choose.
we will likely draft a wr high next year.
so even with fa for austin and beas, we still have hurns, gallup, brown, wilson on ir, williams along with a high 2019 pick.

I had never heard of Covington when we drafted him, so I went and looked him up on Mock Draftable (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/chris-covington), and was like "he's got NFL measurables, it's the 5th round, whatever." But so far, he looked like a good 'un. McClay and co. seem to have a knack for Big 10 LBs.

With Wilson, Thomas, and JML all with one-year contracts, I can see how the scouts might fight to keep him on the roster, especially since he might be good enough to get poached off the PS.

You only quoted the convenient part. He bust his butt and remade himself into a legitimate NFL WR which he proved on a daily basis in camp and when the ball was throw his way in games. You want a trait? I think that sounds like one right there. Heart and desire to do what it takes to go along with the performance he put in. What did Brown do to still be there over him?

Saw same thing. He flashed. He has amazing group to learn from. Would not surprise me at all if he is starter in 2 years.

Covington is a physical beast. He's super raw, but plays with a quiet mean streak.

I have no problem developing this player vs letting go of who we did. He's a bottom of the roster guy right now with upside- I'm ok with it.

The "convienent part?" Your whole viewpoint is based on him "busting his butt," so yeah, that's what I'm addressing.

Lenior hasn't proven himself to be a legit NFL reciever; what in the world are you a talking about? He hasn't even played in a single regular season game against NFL caliber starting corners. Simply making a claim and treating it as a fact doesn't make it so.

What has Brown done you ask? About 10x as much as Lenior has in actual regular season games. His inclusion on the roster is an indictment on what the coaching staff really thought of Lenior's ceiling. It also speaks to what they think of Brown despite him missing alot of training camp.

With all that said, I'm not biggest Brown fan, but I at least can understand the reasoning behind keeping him over a guy like Lenior.

Let’s see if Lenoir actually gets picked up. We tend to overvalue our FA’s and the rueing is often immaterial.
I agree about the over rating.

I can't remember the last time we rue the day we let somebody go who haunted us.

Look at Switzer..

I thought he was going to replace Beasley at some point and look what has happened to him?

There we obviously tried to fix it..

but we just cut the guy we got for him.

(scratching my head)

Good point. Keeping him is more about next season and the season after that than this season.

Actually, Wilson is the only one not under contract next season. JML will be a RFA, and Thomas was signed for two seasons. But for 2020, we only have Covington and LVE under contract. Lee may be done at that point. If Jaylon turns out to be who we think he is, he'll get the next huge contract. So the starters in 2020 could conceivably be Jaylon, LVE, and Covington. I'm not saying that's a sure thing, but it's a reasonable possibility.
