Sean Lee is an UFA after this season.

You obviously think waiting until after the season concludes is the best time to negotiate with him.

I disagree but that's beside the point...

And why is that?

Because that money that could have gone to Clabo that isn't used this season is rolled into next year's cap.

I think working out an extension for Sean Lee before the season starts would be a brilliant decision, and if that is the reason we are saving money to put towards Lee, so that we don't have to backload his contract, that would make a lot of sense to me. It's going to be hard to pay for him, Carter, and Bryant if it's all backloaded. We also will have to start paying Dan Bailey some legit money.

If we would have signed Clabo, that money would have come back from releasing Free. Now that we're apparently not interested in signing a FA RT, we will have even less money if we don't cut Free.

And who says any money saved through a Free cut or contract reduction isn't also earmarked for player extensions or to roll into 2014?

The early indications are this team's high-wire act with the salary cap isn't going away this year.
