Clabo signs with Dolphins

Yes, we should throw money at the problem instead of doing what good teams like the 49ers do and develop the line over time.

They used 2 1st round picks in the same year on Oline.

3 of their 5 starters are 1st round picks, including both their tackles. Their one UFA went undrafted because of off the field concerns, but was still a 4 year starter at Ohio State, not a basketball player.

Its not like the 49er strategy was grab lots of practice squad and 2nd tier guys and pray they develop.

If you want to develop a great line over time that's fine, but you need to invest more than 1 high draft pick in it every other year. Otherwise the alternative is to spend money.

Mike Fisher seems to think they are trying to save as much as they can to re-sign Sean Lee.

It was a one year deal.. it has no effect on us being able to resign or not resign anyone next offseason.

This season it does.

A good line does require the line to be on the same page, hence why it's better to develop a line over time rather than throw money at aging vets.

I agree in theory, but when you have players that aren't qualified to start or worse, are regressing, you can't waste a 3rd season hoping that they will eventually develop, IMO.

It sure does my friend, you put that 3.5 mil + whatever you save with Free's deal & you lock up one of your best players & your leader on the defensive side of the ball..Since there are no FA's worth bringing in besides Brandon Moore, for 2013 I would give Lee the remaining amount of cap space that doesn't go towards draft picks. Then hopefully 2014-15-16 are reasonable #'s for a guy who hasn't been able to stay on the field.

To simplify things, it looks like the Cowboys are taking an "Alan Ball risk" with Parnell.

Hope it turns out for the better this time...

Clabo got 1yr 3.5 million with 1.5 guaranteed.

A tiny investment to buy a half a second and free-up a TE in our new Patriot offense.

25 pages for a guy they didn't sign. Traffic would have overloaded the server if he eould have signed with Dallas.

Again.. one year deal. Comes off the books at the end of the season = doesn't affect resigning anyone once the offseason starts.

All teams roll over some amount of cap space from the previous year. An extra 3.5M for 2013 is 3.5M that can't be rolled over to 2014.

It does affect the ability of the team to extend players this season.

this thread is 4x as big as the one on the dolphins forum.

shows you how fed up people are with this organization.

What is the need for extending players during the season? You can just the same wait until after the season and still extend them. Being too quick to hand out extensions to every Tom, Dick, and Sally is what got us into this mess in the first place.

Sean Lee is an UFA after this season.

You obviously think waiting until after the season concludes is the best time to negotiate with him.

I disagree but that's beside the point...

And why is that?

Because that money that could have gone to Clabo that isn't used this season is rolled into next year's cap.

If we would have signed Clabo, that money would have come back from releasing Free. Now that we're apparently not interested in signing a FA RT, we will have even less money if we don't cut Free.

I see no way that Free is on our roster at his current cap hit. He is getting paid like a top 10 tackle... Say what you will about Jerry, but I just don't think he pays him 7 million dollars...
