This shows he thinks he can but we shall see. I like this move by him and hope it works out for him.

Clarett wants to prove he's worthy of first-round moneyBy John Clayton

Maurice Clarett, who legally challenged the league for early entry, still hasn't given up the thought he should have been a first-round choice in the NFL.

Instead of suing the league, Clarett came up with a novel approach. He is putting his money where his mouth is. On Thursday, he signed a four-year contract in which he gave up the $410,000 of guaranteed money in order to secure an incentive-laden deal that could eventually earn him $7 million.

The complex contract, which includes more than $5 million of performance escalators, forced the Broncos and Clarett's agents to negotiate well into Wednesday night. After a few hours of sleep, they resumed their talks Thursday morning and reached agreement by the afternoon. Clarett was the last pick in the third round of the draft.

The contract was negotiated by Steve Feldman, Josh Luchs and Clarett's attorney and advisor, David Kenner.

"This deal struck gives Maurice the opportunity to be paid like the first-round draft choice he was born to be," Feldman said.

Specifics of the contract are sketchy, but it works something like this. If Clarett gains 1,000 yards, he could hit an escalator worth more than $1 million, almost three times what he would have made in a signing bonus given to him by the Broncos.

The more he rushes for, the more he makes. He can max out at around $7 million.

This was Clarett's gamble. He has the confidence he can gain the yards and hit the $7 million figure. Rollovers give him a chance to make the big bumps in salary if he doesn't do it as a rookie.

To further show his commitment, he accepted no guarantees. The $410,000 the Broncos were willing to give him Thursday was put into workout bonuses in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Clarett wants to prove he's a first-round talent. If he runs like a first-rounder, he could be paid like a first-rounder instead of a third-rounder.

Thats great in all but what he fails to realize is he's got to fight to even get on the field, you've got Bell, Quentin, and who else in that stable, he's got a long way to go, to be a "Main" back in Denver and produce.

I doubt he fails to realize it, he probably just believes he's better than the other guys there and feels he'll prove it. He has put his money where his mouth is, and I commend that.

You don't think he knows that? You don't think his agents told him a thousand times to take the gauranteed money?

Admirable if he really feels that way but I suspect he'll be asking for a new deal or a trade in a year or two.

It's business, man.

NO I doubt they did many many times as you put it, they prob said take 100K+/- or take a chance to earn upto 7mil. His SB would have been around 100K this way they all make more and the agents aren't really gambling much 3% on 100K vs 3% on a possible 7mil I'd tell him take the chance. He still has 410K in work out bonuses he can get over the next 3 years its just not guarnteed.

But really who cares, Denver sucks they will suck this year, and we will bury them in the ground when we play them on thanksgiving.

On one hand, going for the incentives is sign of confidence and willingness to earn every last penny.

On the other hand, Clarett would probably do better to just stay as far out of the limelight as he can while he's proving himself.

I dunno, maybe it's too much cynicism, but when it comes to this guy, nothing ever strikes me as a smart move.

Just more attention getting than anything else.

Oh, yeah. I also have a pretty good feeling about Tatum Bell in Denver's offense. It's just one man's opinion but I think TB will be the heir to Denver's 'automatic-1500-yard season' running game.

Then again I'm not really sure the last time they had a 1500-yard rusher, and I'm not going to look.

So really: What do I know?

One of the biggest knocks on the kid - poor decision making abilities. Surrounded by the same.

Didn't Ricky Williams do something foolish like that as a top 5 pick?

Yeah, but Clarette at least got himself real agents, not a ex-rapper and future inmate who had no clue about reachable incentives.

I'm sure even if Clarette's agents were against the idea, they wrote it up and negotiated like pros.

Ya, commendable, blah blah...stupid! He has to compete with Tatum Bell, Quintin Griffin, Ron Dayne and Mike Anderson. Even if he does get the starting job I can imagine a gameday conversation.
"Mike, ya this is Pat. You know, your boss! Um, yea, I was just wondering if you got that memo I sent you bc li'l Mo's yards are kinda high today. Why don't you think bout putting in Bell or Griff. Thanks a lot Shanny"

Admirable decision to Clarette to make. You have to give him credit for believing in his own abilities. His deal is more of a performance-for-pay agreement. I respect that more than I do the millions (and millions) Alex Smith is going to get in guaranteed money before he even takes one snap as a professional.

Good to see the kid is going for merit rather then money. Wanting to be payed per your performance is always commendable in my book. Hope to see the kid do great things in his career.
