Obviously, Clarett is smoking whatever Quincy and Ricky usually do.

You NEVER turn down guaranteed money playing this sport. This is the N-F-L, not flag football. Every player is one hit away from being unemployed, paralyzed or even worse.

The young man is proud, but pride should take a back seat to common sense when it comes to playing one of the world's toughest sports.

He believes in himself and his ability. I'm not sure how anyone could find fault with that. If he didn't truly believe he could be the best back there he probably wouldn't be NFL material. He obviously believes it and is willing to prove it. I can't really imagine how anyone could have a problem with a guy wanting to actually earn his money through performance in his chosen field. Maybe I'm just not jaded enough.

"Jaded"?

Hmmm...

I can recall a few names of NFL players who proved they were worth their teams' investment. Then, one day, their lives, and careers, changed. Guys like...

Gale Sayers...

Dennis Byrd...

Michael Irvin...

Heck, Korey Stringer could tell you that he proved to be one of the best right tackles in pro football. That is, if he wasn't dead...

...from simply practicing.

Playing a sport like football takes dedication. It is blood, sweat and tears. To excel at it, you have to make the ultimate commitment of body, mind and soul. But even the most dedicated and committed man must realize that playing the game isn't a given and plan for what might not be his life's meal ticket.

Like the team doesn't know that they can just keep him off the field to save money. Just like JJ did to that player pre-Emmitt.

I'm sure the Broncos love this.

So what?? The guy believes in himself and he wants to prove it. He wants to earn his money. Gayle Sayers played 5 years. I don't know how long Byrd played. Irvin played 12 years. Korey Stringer is a pretty sad argument because if Clarret dies he won't need the money. Yeah, if Clarret gets hurt and his career ends in training camp he's going to wish he took that 400k. But that 400k won't sustain him for the rest of his life if that happens anyway. And the odds are he's going to make it through training camp and get a chance to earn that money that's in his incentive laden contract.

He'll Get it done. No matter what anyone says, Clarrett is 1st round talent. He knows it the Broncos Knew it, that's why they jumped and took him before Parcells could get him. BP knows that he is 1st rd talent too.

Bell, is a very good rb, but he is not better than Clarrett, and those other guys, Dane, Griffin and Anderson, they are alright. QG will not be in the NFL much longer, neither will Dane.

The Bronocs were willing to give him a guaranteed signing bonus worthy of the last player picked in the third round. He should attempt to prove that he's worthy of being paid as a third round pick first. There is no shame in that.

Well, I will certainly agree with you if he, alone, will benefit from his income. Sometimes, family members benefit from having a relative become a professional athlete (i.e. mom, etc.). But, I know nothing of Clarett's personal life and familial relationships, so whatever monies his contract would earn may not benefit anyone but him.

True, and I wish him well. Just wish he had taken better advantage of the unique opportunities being presented to him.

Only time will tell if he's taken full advantage of these opportunities. If he runs for 1500 yards this year it's surely going to look like a genius. If he gets hurt or cut in camp he'll look like a fool for not taking the guaranteed money. But either way I can't fault him for believing in himself.

I think Bell is their best back, and if he stays healthy, no big incentives reached for Slo Mo.

I didn't even consider that angle. I haven't been the biggest Clarett fan, but I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that the young man hasn't royally screwed himself with this contract.

I think it was Quentin in 2002 or 2003 but i could be wrong again

You give Quentin too much credit. He has played 16 games over the 2003 and 2004 season. He carried the ball 179 times for 656 yards and 2 TDs over that period.

I think it is admirable that Clarrett wants to play for an incentive laden contract. He wants to prove himself. Ricky Williams did a similar thing and I thought it was admirable back then, too. I can't fault a guy for doing that. I just don't have to think he will achieve those goals this season or next. Partly because I don't think he is 1st round talent and Denver will probably end up using a running back by committe. And since their defense is going to be bad they will have to throw the ball a lot. That will lead to more interceptions by Plummer which will cause Denver to fall behind more, then pass more and even more interceptions.

This is the type of deal I would hope Canty is looking for.

Something to show he is a higher round talent. :starspin

Wow Surprise suprise more critism thrown Claretts way.

How about you guys put your money where your mouth is?

I am willing to bet anyone that Maurice Clarett will become the full time starter at the RB position (not due injury) by mid-season?

I am the same guy who stated that Clarett would be drafted on Day One when most labelled the guy punk and stated he might not even be drafted.

Any takers................

He hasn't had a carry in the NFL yet. How can you evaluate him with this much promise already? There's no way you can know one way or the other. If you could you'd be working in the NFL.

Clarett couldn't even finish out one full season in college w/o getting injured....what makes you think that he can do it in the NFL?

Clarett will NOT get 1000 yards this season...he won't get on the field enough....and not getting 1000 yards in Denver's system is saying something.

I see where you are going.............

There's a big difference between being a full time starter going against the likes of Tatum Bell, Cecil Sapp, Ron Dayne etc and annointing Clarett as the next Terrel Davis or Clinton Portis.

Get the point ;)
