Clarett couldn't even finish out one full season in college w/o getting injured....what makes you think that he can do it in the NFL?

Clarett will NOT get 1000 yards this season...he won't get on the field enough....and not getting 1000 yards in Denver's system is saying something.
Thats your opinion are you willing to take the bet based on my parameters?

A guy like Parcells doesn't consider drafting you if you don't have some character. Is this really that shocking or is just everybody here so on the watchout for the next "NFL Thug" that they completely overlooked these traits he's shown?

Well, keep the finger pointed, I'm sure if concentration is held long enough, your Jedi Power will emerge.

Eyes on Ricky Williams, Chad Johnson, Sean Taylor, T.O., Keyshawn, and all the rest of the Apple Dumpling Gang- I think your powers are working on them too..

HARSH CRITICISM FOR CLARETT DEAL

An NFL personnel executive has shared with us some sharp criticism of the contract signed by running back Maurice Clarett with the Broncos, which includes no bonus or guaranteed money.

"The deal confirms what we thought all along," said the source. "The kid and the people advising him are f--king idiots.

"He should have taken the money. He's lucky he got drafted at all. The Broncos abused these guys."

Yikes.

Our initial reaction to the incentive-laden deal (scroll down for more) was that it creates a potentially difficult environment for the Broncos by requiring them to either give Clarett more than enough chances to make his money or keep close watch on him to ensure that he doesn't accuse the team of keeping him down.

This shows he thinks he can but we shall see. I like this move by him and hope it works out for him.

Clarett wants to prove he's worthy of first-round moneyBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

Maurice Clarett, who legally challenged the league for early entry, still hasn't given up the thought he should have been a first-round choice in the NFL.

Instead of suing the league, Clarett came up with a novel approach. He is putting his money where his mouth is. On Thursday, he signed a four-year contract in which he gave up the $410,000 of guaranteed money in order to secure an incentive-laden deal that could eventually earn him $7 million.

The complex contract, which includes more than $5 million of performance escalators, forced the Broncos and Clarett's agents to negotiate well into Wednesday night. After a few hours of sleep, they resumed their talks Thursday morning and reached agreement by the afternoon. Clarett was the last pick in the third round of the draft.

The contract was negotiated by Steve Feldman, Josh Luchs and Clarett's attorney and advisor, David Kenner.

"This deal struck gives Maurice the opportunity to be paid like the first-round draft choice he was born to be," Feldman said.

Specifics of the contract are sketchy, but it works something like this. If Clarett gains 1,000 yards, he could hit an escalator worth more than $1 million, almost three times what he would have made in a signing bonus given to him by the Broncos.

The more he rushes for, the more he makes. He can max out at around $7 million.

This was Clarett's gamble. He has the confidence he can gain the yards and hit the $7 million figure. Rollovers give him a chance to make the big bumps in salary if he doesn't do it as a rookie.

To further show his commitment, he accepted no guarantees. The $410,000 the Broncos were willing to give him Thursday was put into workout bonuses in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Clarett wants to prove he's a first-round talent. If he runs like a first-rounder, he could be paid like a first-rounder instead of a third-rounder.
I think he's still an idiot....wait until he's a backup in Denver, pissed away 410,000, and starts blaming the coach for not playing him or allowing him to earn his incentives.

My stance on contract matters are pretty clear, I am always on the side of Labor. The cynic in me says that the NFL executive quoted is right and the Broncos are gonna screw Clarrett. Even if he reaches these goals they will not honor the contract. He will either have to restructure for "salary cap help" or will be traded before they have to pay the incentives or they will release him due to salary cap issues. I commend what he was attempting to do here but the owners of these teams NEVER honor contracts no matter how good or great a player is or was. Ask Troy Aikman who was released or Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott etc.... The bottom line for these kids is maximizing their dollar. The career life span for pro athletes is short, ages 21-33 in most cases therefore you should take all guaranteed money offered. No athlete is promised a big contract after the 1st contract lapses because of the franchise tag, ask Edge or Charles Woodson or Pace or Shaun Alexander. I hope I am wrong but history in the cap era leads me to believe I'll be right unfortunately.

I see where you are going.............

There's a big difference between being a full time starter going against the likes of Tatum Bell, Cecil Sapp, Ron Dayne etc and annointing Clarett as the next Terrel Davis or Clinton Portis.

Get the point ;)
Not really since I never annointed Drew Henson anything other than the best QB prospect we've had since Troy Aikman and someone I was looking forward to seeing develop. In other words his competition is just as pedestrian.

Get the point? :wink2:

Wow Surprise suprise more critism thrown Claretts way.

How about you guys put your money where your mouth is?

I am willing to bet anyone that Maurice Clarett will become the full time starter at the RB position (not due injury) by mid-season?

I am the same guy who stated that Clarett would be drafted on Day One when most labelled the guy punk and stated he might not even be drafted.

Any takers................

He won't beat out Tatum Bell.

Two takers Charles. You got enough paychecks to back all this up?
Are you these guys mouth pieces or something????

Neither has accept the parameters on my bet. Here is the bet again:

I am willing to bet anyone that Maurice Clarett will become the full time starter at the RB position (not due injury) by mid-season?

I could careless about their opinions on yards or who they think will start. Until someone states that Maurice Clarett won't be the full time starter by mid-season, then we won't have a bet.

Logic dictates that if by week 9 Clarett isn't the fulltime starter then I've lost the bet.

Any takers.

Capice!!!!!

I'm not the betting type and certainly don't have any money that could possably be just thrown away. I have my opinion on who'll be the starter barring injury and that's it.

I for one applaud Clarrett's decision to try and EARN his money, too bad all NFL contracts aren't written in the same context.

Some guys are just unwilling to give him a break no matter what he does, but I am pulling for the guy and I hope he reaches the incentives and earns the full amount of the contract. Hey he was true to his word and didn't hold out unlike some other guys who have contracts and still aren't in camp.

There should never be a reason for a 3rd round choice to hold out. He would have taken a beating in the media if he held out. He shouldn't be bashed for signing the type of contract that he did. It may be a poor financial decision on his part, but it is an admirable thing to do. Good luck to him, but I just don't see him reaching his incentives.

You're sure I wouldn't need to loan you the cash huh?

Simple interest on the loan. 50% compounded monthly.

I pretty much agree with this.

I am one who has resented Clarrett for his actions in the past, but now that he's in the NFL, I'm willing to keep and open mind about him and am impressed that he has enough confidence in himself to put it all on the line with an incentive-laden low dollar base contract. If he can avoid injury, stay out of trouble and play well, he should be rewarded. I would like to see more of a trend toward this type of contract.
