Clayton on the Commanders and Leonard Davis

abersonc;1403468 said:
The jist of this is that Davis didn't want a 5 year 25-30 mill deal with the standard 10 mill or so in bonus -- he wants nearly the entire deal in bonus money.

The real issue here is that Davis will be 29 when the season starts - this will be his only big free agent payday. A guy like Dockery got what is basically a 5 year deal -- he'll be hitting the market again at 32. Davis won't get that opportunity.
While Davis hasn't had a big Free Agent payday before, Davis signed a massive rookie contract (earning an estimated 35 to 40 million!). He's not a stranger to big paydays.....

True. But that has nothing to do with how you approach FA as a commodity.

6. So much for Daniel Snyder not being a big player in free agency. The Commanders signed middle linebacker London Fletcher-Baker and cornerback Fred Smoot to five-year deals. They are talking to cornerback Travis Fisher. Offensive lineman Leonard Davis is deciding between the Cowboys and Commanders. Davis pulled an interesting move. He asked Jerry Jones for a massive amount of guarantees in his contract. When he didn't get them, he left for Snyder's private plane and a trip to Washington. Don't you get the feeling he's going to end up with the Commanders?

Good, it just goes to show you that the Cowboys are way smarter then to throw big money at an self overrated player who is not even being courted by the arm pit of the NFL..the Arizona Cardinals

Just an observation here.

You REALLY don't like this guy do you?

Davis would be an upgrade at RG.

So is this;

$49.95 at the Home Depot. Maybe we could put wheels on it.

I dont see how anyone who's actually watched him play could say they DO like him

David

Seriously - it happens every free agency period that someone is overvalued based on name. Everyone has heard of Davis, so he must obviously be good.

Thing is, I do think he would be an upgrade over Rivera. But I also think we can get an upgrade for less for a less known player. WE don't need brilliance at the position, we just need someone who has a good back.

As stated a million times, our free agency period rests more on the ability to bring Colombo back than get Davis.

I like Grubb alot...wouldnt be opposed to Blalock either, just not where we draft in round one

I hope we keep Columbo, but not at ANY price...if its reasonable then definitely

David

I think this is a good year for guards. I like Grubb and Blalock too. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they'll be there in round two. Duckworth, Beekman, and Ramirez are also guys that I like later in day one/early day two. Wrotto (GT) is a sleeper of mine....I like those ex-DL turned OL. I think they bring a bit of a nasty streak.

That would be good for us in two ways...1) He wouldn't be a cowboy and 2) he'd be a Commander.

if those two happen that that implies a 3rd...

3) he'd get blown up by our new aggressive Defense :D

I agree. Both Grubb and Blalock should be available at pick #22. If they are, I say we trade down a few spots, pick up an extra 3rd or 4th round pick, and take one of the guards. Paying 50 million for the last few guard in FA give me the heebie Jeebies. Especially when we're talking about a player that has questions about his intensity level.

We really need to retain columbo though. Good OT's don't grow on trees. Give him market value and get him in here.

The more I read on Columbo, the more I think he'll end up with us again. He hasn't visited any teams yet.....and no one's beating his door down.

What sucks is, on Madden, I can get through free agency in about ten minutes. I really don't think it should be taking them this long. Make an offer, sim a day, and then if someone outbids you up the bonus money a little, and sim another day!

Doesn't Jerry know anything?

After signing Fletcher and Smoot, what's the Commanders' cap situation look like? Can't be good.

Samuels restructured this morning to save 2.4M. Releasing John Hall will add 1.5M. That right there is enough to sign Davis.

Thank God. I hope you get him.
