I'm shocked the little ATM in Wash isn't offering 24M :money:

I keep hearing about the Commanders signing big name free agents. How? Arn't they all but tapped out under the salary cap?!?!

Wow. Seems like Freeney's request for 30 million isn't that crazy.

But that is what more cap room gets you.
If true, the 49ers are offering Clements a $23 million signing bonus. If I'm not mistaken, signing bonuses do not count against the salary cap in any given year.

Big backloaded signing bonuses that they will never see and cheap annual salaries......basically they depend on the cap being raise every year. If it was ever lowered or kept the same they'd be screwed.

Yes they do but it's split over the life of the contract.

The 23 mill will be spread of over the length of the contract and does go against the cap.

so newman is a free agent after this year?

He's under contract until 08, and I think in 09 we (or he) can void his deal. At which point he will be almost 31.

IIRC AdamJT13 reported that Newman's deal voids after the 2008 season at which time he would become a UFA. If that is the case, Dallas has him for at least another 2 seasons though I would expect they would get a new deal done with him before heading into that 2008 season.

supposedly is getting a 23 million dollar signing bonus

That is an absurd amount of money. I thought that owner was "cheap". They're going back to the back alley Eddie DeBartolo free spending days!

How is it bad for the league if the owners who are richer than god have to give more of their cash to the guys that we actually watch?

It's not bad unless the owners keep passing down the cost to us who have season tickets, and that is what is happening. If not for that, and if I never went to game I could care less how much owners spend you are correct.

If it is a 6 year deal, then that is not that bad of a cap hit- depending on the yearly salary. The 49rs have almost 40 million to spend; they could get 4 other guys probably for the same price.
