CN: DeMarco Murray: The New Third Back, or Something More?

I wish I was wired the same way.

I won't hold anything against Murray, I hope he does great for the team. Believe me, I'd rather be 'wrong' and the team do well than be 'right' and the team struggle.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about him.

But I'm not going so far as to participate in a thread claiming him 'the best running back in the draft' either.

Took years of rewiring. :laugh2: I worry about things I can control not those I can't. Nothing wrong with anyone saying they do not like the selection or they would have gone a different direction if they had the call.

As for claims that Murray is the best back in the draft I don't agree with that I think Ingram is the best back in this draft.

I do like Murray and think he can be a big part of this team even if he was not my choice.

Nobody knows who the best back in the draft will be. For another 3-4 years. Murray will bring some speed to the equation. And receiving. He's a multi-dimensional back. Let's see what he's got.

It's always good news when a player (however acquired) contributes to the team's success. If DeMarco becomes #1 because he's that good - HALLELUJAH!

That's not reality in todays NFL. There are financial ramifications that always come into play.

If we can re-work Barber's contract, I'd say lets keep Marion and trade or cut Tashard who's a liability becuz he can't play ST nor pass block as well as the other guys. Besides, we drafted another FB (Chapas) and if Garrett wants to use a FB (Chapas or Gronk) to lead block for Felix or Demarco......look out Cowboy fans!!!! We'll have some HUGE runs by these two speed backs!!!!

At this point we don't know.

One thing for certain: Murray > Barber

I really hope he turns out to be a solid pro...he has another gear that most college running backs dont have

I get your point. I just think you're overplaying it.

If Felix Jones was a top 10 pick, I could see what you are saying. But as a late first round DP, and Murray being a 3rd round DP, we can easily afford both on the roster at the same time.

I can really see this guy flourishing in our system. He was drafted more for this blocking (most underrated skill that all RBs should excel in) and receiving skills (he catches the ball like a receiver) than for his running skills. On 3rd downs, he's going to be another receiving threat out of the backfield.

How many LB's can keep up w/ player with 4.4 speed on intermediate ot deep routes? Not many. I would imagine he will be targeted often on 3rd and long situations.

I have seen scouting reports that say Murray is not a good pass blocker. Which is it?

While not my first pick as a running back I understand the logic now.

They hate Choice for whatever reason and Barber is used up so they needed another back. Murray gives you someone similar to Felix so you don't have to have a totally different set of plays for him when he's in.

Entitled to your own opinion. I guess we'll see when Jones' contract comes up.

I know right? I don't even know why they give out 1st round picks after 10.

Seriously, if Murray ended up being the starting RB for us, the pick of Jones is going to look like we don't know what the heck were doing. Lots of time and money wasted.

The Felix posts on the forum then and the DeMarco posts now seem about the same to me.

I don't think many of us are worried about how the Cowboys look if Felix busts, I think we're worried about having the same posts in two years like the ones we're seeing now, but Felix being long gone and DeMarco being the latest disappointment. That's a bad scenario.

He signed a 10.5 million 5 year contract 3 years ago. That averages to about 2 mill a year though it's not that big of a hit to the cap.

That's significantly more than Murray will make, obviously. If you are the one signing the checks, I'm sure you want to see Jones out there earning his pay as a starter. That said, Murray can still increase his own load and share of the carries with a stellar performance.

Why can't both Jones and Murry get significant carries?

Carolina still has both James Stewart AND DeAngelo Williams in the same back field and both are first round DP's.

Kansas City has Thomas Jones and Jamal Charles splitting the carries almost evenly.

Miami has Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown splitting the carries almost evenly.

Why would Felix Jones be considered a wasted DP, and a waste of time and money, if he split time evenly with DeMarco Murray and both got around 200 carries?

There's no problem at all with Murray and Jones sharing the major part of the running load.

A common complaint I've seen about DeMarco Murray's selection at the top of the 3rd round concerns his role; most critics assume Dallas spent the 71st pick on Marion Barber's replacement, and that Murray will start his career as the 3rd stringer.

I'm not as convinced. The placement of his selection, and the Cowboys' spotty running back play the last three years, suggests that Murray will have every chance to assume the role Marion Barber held in game one last year -- that of the Cowboys starter.

If they give him that opportunity, going into TC with the RB position wide open. And if he proves he is the best, then go for it. We just need some consistency. Not this RB by committee.

Please no more Barber. I loved his style of play, but that same style has worn him out. He is done, and I hope we are done with him.

I'm on the fence with Choice. At this point I don't see a reason in cutting him if his first contract is still in affect. A 4th rounder doesn't cost much as far as cap space, and he has shown a bit. I think he is in trouble though. For some reason I don't think our Head Coach thinks too much of him.
