If you follow the NFL and its draft closely, you know the last player selected is known as Mr. Irrelevant because he is unlikely to make the team. The Dallas Cowboys haven’t had the last pick in the draft recently, but they do have their own Mr. Irrelevant in safety Matt Johnson.
Much like the last pick in the draft, there is potential for Johnson to make the team, but the odds are stacked against him. The only difference is that Matt Johnson was selected much higher in the draft and expected to make an impact for the Cowboys. Injuries have derailed Johnson’s career, or lack thereof, and the latest setback could spell the end of his time in Dallas. This year a hamstring strain will sideline Johnson for at least a week, once again putting him behind the rest of the team.
When Johnson first arrived as a fourth-round pick out of Eastern Washington, he brought a packed resume that included 17 career interceptions, two seasons with over 100 tackles and six forced fumbles. Johnson also brought the prototypical athleticism the NFL looks for in a safety, and his measurables were off the charts.
That’s the sad part in Johnson’s inability to stay healthy; he has the skills to be a real player at a position where the team has struggled to find playmakers since Darren Woodson retired. Many believe Johnson has that ability, except we’ve never seen enough of him to know for sure. In a perfect world, the Cowboys would begin the season with J.J. Wilcox at one safety, Matt Johnson at the other, and using Barry Church as a nickel linebacker...
