Wade “Cupcake” Phillips Gives Cowboys Christmas Off
On Friday, Cowboys receiver Roy Williams will be able to wake up, find coal in his stocking, then relax and enjoy Christmas with his family. Williams will have that leisure because Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is giving Christmas Day off to his players.
“I think you lose a lot [by practicing] on Christmas Day,” Phillips said. “[They have] families, a lot of them have kiddoes and stuff. You take that away from them, you lose a lot more that way than you would having them be there.”
With this holiday break, fans can start calling Phillips “Fruitcake” instead of “Cupcake” as he continues his trend of taking it easy on players when he should press them and demand more.
The next two games hold a lot for the Cowboys. Two wins and the Cowboys are in the playoffs. Anything less and the future gets fuzzy, except for Phillips departing Dallas.
But it holds a lot more for the fans. No Cowboys fan wants to lose to the Commanders. Take it from me and TLH, who both live in Northern Virginia. We’d never hear the end of it up here.
That being said, this loss should never happen. The Commanders are coming off of a 45-12 beatdown at the hands of the Giants on Monday night. We topped the previously unbeaten Saints on Saturday night. Albert Haynesworth, their best player, is questioning his role in the Commanders defense. DeMarcus Ware, playing hurt, won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Week honors and clinched the win with a sack/forced fumble.
We have a long week, theirs is short. We’re riding high on emotions, they’re in the pits. Our best player is happy, theirs is grumbling.
This is the kind of game that the Cowboys should win handily. We should run them into the damn ground.
Instead, the Cowboys have Friday off. If the team is flying on Saturday, that means that the team will head into Sunday’s game two days removed from their last practice.
It’s not right. The Cowboys should be practicing on Friday. I’m not saying that those members of the team who want to celebrate Christmas shouldn’t be able to, but there should be a nice, short, concise practice sometime on Friday. Ask the players when they want it. When they leave, tell them “Merry Christmas, Beat the “Skins.”
Even Michael Irvin agrees with me, as he said that the Cowboys need a Christmas practice.
Instead, Phillips is giving his team every opportunity to fail. We can only hope that the Cowboys can pull off a win despite their coach.
