I remember reading in Landry's book that he liked to start the game on defense because he felt at the start of the game both teams are fired up but defenses were likely to have more success at that point in the game. I can't argue with Landry, so I say defer and get the ball at the start of the second half. It is always good to score to end the first half, then get the ball back and score to start the second half.

Defense. The entire Washington game changed when we scored before and after half.

I would go defense first. Normally I don't really care, depending weather conditions. Which is not a concern. However, will the sun be a factor this time. Since Jerry does not believe in curtains. So that could be strategy.

It makes no difference.

Unless the sun will be a problem during part of the game, then defer and pick the direction that works best for the offense.

Defense - double up at end of half and start of 3rd quarter

I always defer. But in the great scheme of things it doesn’t make much difference.

offense 10-0 when we score first - 2-5 when we don't - BobHaze posted this on another thread.

Only thing that's stopping me from taking the ball first is the packers are one of the best 3rd quarter teams - so maybe let them start while they are shakey?
Good summary.

I say ride what got us there. Score early, let the defense do its thing. CeeDee will always be open on drives, and defense is #1 pass rush unit.

I would always elect to get the ball first. Play aggressive and to your strengths. You only get one shot at the playoffs in 2023-2024.

Cowboys only lost one game this year when had lead at halftime, and it was Philly game where we blew it at the end, do everything you can to get that lead quickly.

Up until about ten years ago, it seems almost nobody deferred. Win the toss, take the ball. The game is about possessing the ball, right? There is a fine line between "clever" and "stupid."

In the case of the Cowboys playing at home against a suspect defense, I think you take the ball first, cram it down the Packers' throats, and go up 7-0.

I sense the alternative is kicking away, giving the Packers an opportunity to score on their first series of scripted plays while the defense acquires their sea legs. Or, most reasonable-case scenario, we end up fielding a punt at our own 10-yard-line, looking at a 90-yard drive.

And because Packers are a legit run threat, would like to give the Cowboys a chance to score first, JUST IN CASE defense rolls over for a quick TD which they have before.

Always defer to the 2nd half. I have had this mindset since I began watching football. Teams are usually settled in by then and clicking more on offense. Especially if you can double up and end the 1st half with the ball and get the ball to start the 2nd half. Packers with Rodgers were great at doing this.

The worst scenarios is starting on offense, stalling out and then the opposing team gets the ball and scores. Now you are behind the 8ball in the score and they steal a possession.
