Cowherd definitely is not being fired. ESPN was aggressive in trying to keep him but he choose to move forward.

Head of ESPN was told to trim the budget ditches Simmons, Olbermann and Cowherd. Not firings but a clear split.

Not true. Cowherd was offered a contract to stay and ESPN did not want to let him go.

Sounds to me like Cowherd is the one who made the decision to leave. Looks like he's got a huge offer from Fox Sports on the table.

I used to dislike, Colin. And I mean I couldn't stand the guy. A couple years ago I had a change of heart. The dude gets football. I mean he lives for it. He's up on all topics and I rarely disagree with what he's saying. I just think he's a smart guy. ESPN will pay for it. I'll be checking out Fox Sports 1 if he goes.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but Colin has a good show and gets some pretty good guests, unlike First Take with their nobody rap guests they continually put on. They completely dumb down their show when guys like 2.5 Chain comes on.

No idea the dollar amount. An ESPN exec and Cowherd said they offered him a new contract.

What was he offered?

I don't know, but did find this:

"Because a lot of their costs are things that are really hugely valuable and make ESPN what it is — which is rights contracts with the NBA, the NFL, these big leagues — they can't really cut there," Ramachandran explains.

While ESPN has retained contracts with many of these leagues, big-name commentators and hosts like Bill Simmons, Keith Olbermann and Colin Cowherd have left the network in the past few months (though salary disputes haven't been among public reasons for the departures).

The three of them all leaving within months of each other and ESPN are trying to save money. It just seems pretty obvious to me. The network is not the sum of its personalities. Skip and screamin' better watch it. Are the Mikes on big money? Depressing if they are, their sports opinions are close to useless.

I bet the mikes are making a lot, and yes they are horrible. Greenberg seems like the ultimate company man to me, im sure they are more than safe from cuts

ESPN SR VP saying they were aggressive in trying to keep Colin Cowherd. IMO Colin wanted to move on to something else and get back to the West Coast. I believe he is moving to Los Angeles.

Traug Keller says ESPN did everything it could to retain Colin Cowherd. When the radio host suggested he wanted to move his base of operations from Bristol, Ct. to Los Angeles, ESPN management greenlit the proposal. Extra television opportunities? You bet, the company said. Keller, a longtime ESPN executive, would know the details of such contractual negotiations. The senior vice president of production business divisions oversees all aspects of the ESPN’s audio business including talent, staffing, national programming content, scheduling and event production. He’s also enjoyed a good relationship with Cowherd since hiring the host in 2003 to replace Tony Kornheiser for the late morning time slot on ESPN Radio.

But while ESPN’s offer was aggressive, it was not enough. Last week The Big Lead’s Ryan Glasspiegel broke the story that Cowherd was leaving ESPN at the end of his current contract.

“I’m close to Colin and I think he’s a unique talent,” said Keller by phone from Gleaneagles, Scotland, where he is attending The Open Championship. “But I think he was playing this around in his mind, 'Is there something bigger and better out there for me?' This was also, and make no mistake about it, this was about the bids that were put in. We put in an aggressive bid for Colin and I think he got a better one from Fox. As you know, that’s life.”
If you are looking for a starting date for Cowherd at Fox Sports, keep this in mind: Cowherd has a book coming out Oct. 1 and I’d guess he’d want to be at his new employer to promote that (as well as having his new employer promote the heck out of the book). Based on multiple industry sources I spoke with, the Fox Sports salary they anticipated for Cowherd was north of $6 million annually when you include radio and television work.

Six is lower than I thought for him. Heard before Simmons was in the 13 range.

He is, and the act like the conscience of sports journalism. It's nauseating.

I'm going to miss him, to be honest. He's part shock-jock but also has some very interesting insights. Had a lot of nice things to say about Romo the other day too, and he's totally on board with the lawsuit filed by Fan Expo LLC against the NFL.

ESPN has been bleeding talent lately. Should be some openings for some of the experts on the Zone to get a job soon, huh?

Radio host Colin Cowherd no longer will appear on ESPN following comments he made questioning the intelligence of Dominican Republic players related to baseball one day earlier, the company said in a statement Friday.

"Colin Cowherd's comments over the past two days do not reflect the values of ESPN or our employees," ESPN said in a statement. "Colin will no longer appear on ESPN."

Cowherd issued an apology later Friday via Twitter.

Cowherd had said Thursday that he didn't believe baseball was complex, saying a third of the sport was from the Dominican Republic, which had "not been known, in my lifetime, as having, you know, world-class academic abilities.''

Looks like sour grapes from BSPN.

Having said that, Colin routinely supports all the PC stuff and it came back to bite him. In our overly sensitive "looking to get offended" society nobody is safe or immune from backlash, even those who support the nonsense.
