I keep hearing that Collins can't play at right tackle. This is an honest question ........how many of you believe Collins would be an immediate upgrade over Doug Free if we resigned Leary? Free is a walking turnstile/penalty maker.

I don't think so. Collins struggles in pass protection inside at guard, so I can't imagine he'd do better at tackle.

One of his biggest problems is he just wants to maul people so much, he lunges and gets off-balance too often. Once he controls that, he'll be a great player because the talent is clearly there. But I don't think Collins has the feet to play outside and maybe he never will.

Leary's getting $8 million-plus a year from somebody and it ain't gonna be the Cowboys. The Saints, maybe?
I see his knee keeping him from getting as much guaranteed as he wants, or for a term as long as he'd like. Sucks for him, he deserves making as much as he can, this is his big contract

Four of the 5 posts made do not really have any bearing on my original post.

Immediate? Absolutely not. Collins has been learning to play left guard in this league since we signed him. Learning to play right tackle will take quite a few changes in technique and footwork.

I know some believe that anyone can step in and play up to Free's level, but that's never been the case, which is why he continues to be the starter.

Collins may be the superior player, but all of his work in college and the NFL was on the left side so there will be a transition there that would take some time.

Now, having said that, I'm all for re-signing Leary, because I believe he's a better guard than Free is a tackle at this point and because he is younger, and letting Collins and Green compete at right tackle. We don't even have to cut Free until we need his cap hit to spend on Martin, so we can see how the experiment goes before having to make a decision.

How upset would people here be if we selected a tackle in the first round to replace Free?

Probably plenty, but no one should be. He is the worst starter on the team. Not the offense, the team

Collins was debatably the best OL prospect in that ENTIRE draft.

A big reason for that was because they thought he could play tackle.

But, his upside is apparently much higher at G. Considering they've developed 3 All-Pro guys on the OL, I'll listen to 'em I guess.

There was a long thread about thus not long ago.

Nobody knows.

Some draft analysts thought he could play RT and some thought OG was his most likely position.

Opinions at CZ are about evenly split on whether he can or can't.

Most doubt that the team will try it.

There is no proof that he can't do it. He only practiced there about 4 times during his rookie training camp.

It may be more about him being a slow learner than a lack of physical ability. He still needs work at OG in terms of consistency which is a mental issue. He would need even more work at OT and moving from Left to Right.

I don't. He missed games for a pulled groin. That is it.

I'd rather sign Leary, trade Collins for the best pick available and use that pick on an RT...and from everything I've read, Collins can not play RT, not that Free can play RT anymore...

Mixed feelings.

I'm fine with replacing Free with a first round pick. That would be awesome. My top priority would always be the OL.

I would be irritated that they had to use a first to replace Free when the could have done it a couple of years ago for an extra 1.4M per season. Can they just trade Romo to get JP back? ;)
