If they wanted to offer an extension right now I could see something like 5/25m......20m.guaranteed....10m signing bonus

Year..................Cap Hit
2017...................2.5m
2018...................3m
2019...................3.5m
2020...................8m........extend again
2021...................8m

Right now we are looking at 600k this year and 4m+ next year on a 1st round tender

I think he will jump at 20m guaranteed after missing out on the draft

Next year we do Martin at 7/60m

Where he ranks is irrelevant to whether the staff starts him or another. The question is who are the capable starters at RT and who does the staff want to play from that list.

I've never been a huge Free fan although I have taken to pointing out his actual level of play vs the mythical perception by some here. And I've always said he wasn't so good he couldn't be replaced.

I'm my impression he's played well enough the staff has looked at other positions to improve whether from desire or necessity. I think Green might have challenged him more this year had he stayed healthy. So, IMO, Free has been fortunate no one came along to easily replace him. OTOH, he's played well enough prior to this year to make that not an easy task.

My guess is they will have some competition for him this year assuming he's even on the roster. I'd say right now that's better than 50/50. The offseason moves will say more then the draft.

How many sacks did we give up last year? How many did Free give up looking at multiple reporting agencies? What's the average number of sacks given up by the 'average' NFL RT last year? Have you looked at all his play using game film and the All 22? If you find him average do you hold him to the level of play of an All Pro colleague on the team or just between RTs around the league? If you hold him to the same level of play as an All Pro around him why do you do so? Should you compare him to RTs around the league as well as RTs on the team in justifying any decisions regarding his play?

I gave him a C- based on a full season with one post season game of viewing. How did you rank him?

Can we let Parnell go? It was two years ago now and we've already got the comp pick and it turned out stellar. Is Parnell better then Free at this point, my statement is who cares? We have Dak because Parnell got paid, and that's good enough for me.

And as Collins at RT I don't think the team sees him as a RT. And in this years draft there's about zero chance we use a pick before the 3rd on a OT, its a weak OT class and I suspect they are going to rise up the board to desperate teams.

Dak was a comp pick from Philly for Murray, who did we acquire for the Parnell comp anyone?

What he didn't mention is that Bill Callahan, the OL coach who implemented this blocking scheme did not want Free as a starter. He tried to bench him and Garrett refused. That started the rift between Callahan and Garrett that resulted in Callahan leaving and going to the Skins.

Would love to read more on this if possible.

Reporters will come on Sport Talk radio and tell these stories, but they generally won't put it in print. The Cowboys media guys like Broaddus, Mickey, etc. will tell some of these stories on their video shows (The Break, Talking Cowboys) but generally won't put it in print. Also, I know one of the local media guys that covers the Cowboys and they all know a lot of stories that don't get reported. Local media have to be careful about what they report because team officials can cut off their access to the team in terms of interviewing players, etc.

I think it is generally well know that Callahan departed because he did not get along with Garrett. Callahan was able to go directly to Jerry on issues and bypass Garrett. That's how Callahan ended up as the O-Coordinator for a year. He convinced Jerry that he could do it better than Garrett. If you remember, Garrett would not admit all that off-season that Callahan was going to call the plays, but the media all seemed to know it was going to happen based on their questions and it did indeed happen. There a was a lot of discussion about how Callahan would call the plays but they would stay with Garrett's scheme. Anyway, that was the major part of their rift but they had already had issues before that which included Callahan wanting to bench Free with Garrett refusing. Callahan appealed to Jerry and they compromised with Free and Parnell splitting snaps in the final 4 games that season. The next season Parnell was injured in training camp and Callahan became the OC. Calllahan was replaced by Linehan in 2014. Garrett didn't want Callahan to call the plays but Jerry didn't want Garrett to go back to calling plays so they brought in Linehan in 2014. Callahan wanted to leave then, but was under contract and Jerry insisted that he stay. When Callahan's contract was up after 2014, he departed for the Skins.

Thanks. Knew that Callahan was unhappy with demotion from OC to OL coach but did not know that it was Garrett who was the source. Makes sense.
