Experience counts for something which is why he can be an emergency OT, but he doesnt have the body or skill set to be a quality NFL starter at OT. His body is too square, his arms are too short and he doesnt to lateral movement to slide with NFL pass rushers. These things arent nearly as big an issue in college as they are in the NFL which is why you see alot of excellent college OT looked at solely as OG's in the NFL
I get your point but are those anatomical limitations as crucial at the RT spot? Differently stated, you think Dallas' vision for him when drafted was to be a guard long-term? Or was the plan to have him be he Free replacement? That was always my impression.

Actually read his combine profile from his draft. And yes, it says ideally suited to be moved to inside in a zone blocking scheme. Which is exactly what we did. So right u are!!!! :)

During the draft, the Cowboys listed Martin as a Guard when they turned in the card.

Anyone else in favor of starting leary over Collins. I know Collins has more upside but he struggles badly at times. Btw Collins is the only difference between the 2016 o line and the 2014 o line.
I thought Collins struggled mightily- I'd prefer Leary to start. Collins is playing like a undrafted free agent- which he was.

Thats never been in the plans.

Martin and Collins have played tackle in college. There was talk of Martin and he was practicing all over the line other than LT. Even center in case he had to backup in a pinch. He's the most versatile of all our lineman and one of the biggest reason's we drafted him. Collins is better suited as a guard.

If it was to be Free's replacement, Free never would have been resigned after 2014. I dont recall Martin ever taking so much as a practice snap at OT with the Cowboys. I dont recall them openly saying, but I dont think they have ever had any intention of Martin playing OT

Leary was a non-factor as a rookie, was decent in his second year and was rock solid in his third. Collins was good in his first year with flashes of great and is just starting his second season. Leary has a groin injury (again), Collins does not. Leary is going to leave in FA in 2017 and Collins is not. Dallas needs to play Collins.

Free is the real issue. Why not slide collins to tackle and have leary at guard. Free is too old and slow to handle speed rushers

So was Martin and the entire OL. Was a bad game for the whole unit. But yet still didn't give up a sack. We know Collins and Martin can play and I feel these guys are knocking off the rust. Not concerned one bit with the OL
Collins wasn't gia last year either other than a few highlights. He gets beat a lot.

But there is no talk of that happening. Martin and Collins skull set doesn't translate to the tackle position while they both have the skill set to be elite guards.

Collins and Free are the worst players on the offensive line. This isn't necessarily a bad a thing since the other three are great, but Collins especially was poor in the game. I think if Leary was in there, Zeke would have run better and the coaching staff should have made the change after seeing how he was struggling.

Yes. I recall that situation. At the time i chalked it up to conveying out INTENT more so than what he was ultimately capable of playing. I think I had heard/read some commentary at the time about Zack would play initially at guard and then be out long-term answer at RT. So they just stuck with me. It wasn't until I really dove into his draft profile (prompted by Darth's earlier post) that I see the consensus view that he's best suited to play guard as his natural position. I guess we could've used some longer arms on Zack when he tried to get that block on the Murray fumble against Greenbay in the 2014 playoffs, huh??? On the latter, I know the blame for that play typically goes to Murray for not securing the ball adequately (I know that's where I placed it) but i have always wondered to what degree Zack is haunted by that play for not sustaining the block for a split second longer?

Frankly, at the time, I thought they backed into that plan due to Martin reaching all pro at guard and Free somewhat giving a decent accounting for himself in 2014, earning the extension. At the time I honestly thought if Free had faltered, they would have shifted Martin. Now I see how things are being played that Chaz Green is the primary succession plan for Free based on this preseason. Chaz was not in my line of thinking back in 2014.
