Average is a significant advantage over garbage.

It's not just "studs" that matter.

I’m not delusional and neither is pessimist. The Colts’ D is head and shoulders above ours. They’ve done a better job drafting and making FA signings. Our clowns don’t do either well for the most part. Just admit it - you’ll feel better.

The hate posted by Lessimist 24/7 on threads = delusions. Just admit it - you’ll feel better

Nah he's right. It's really not close

D. Leonard today = 12 tackles, ZERO sacks. Colts D = 2 sacks. How is Leonard elite on a DWare level? What is he elite at, tackling? It isn't sacks. Since a poster said he was 5 times better than DLaw.

I tend to think more along Mike Lombardi’s line of thought. I think an effort based defense like the colts won’t last too long. Seattle has maintained and adapted and the same could happen in Indy.

These type of simplistic schemes are all about execution. They are easier for a young players to come in right away and make an impact. Downside is, the defense isn't opponent specific and it is easy to figure out where the weaknesses are. Each coordinator has his own version and they put their own imprint of the scheme.

I did read up about Dan Quinn's version last night. As you know he is a former DC from Seattle, in which they play a similar scheme that Marinelli ran. It's quite different up front:

LE-4 Tech (2 Gap)
NT-0 Tech (2 Gap)
3T-(1 Gap)
RE-Leo (Stand-up Edge Rusher-1 Gap)

When was the group healthy and together? I believe Brown was out to start the year. Lee was out to start the year. Gregory was on suspension the first 6. LVE got hurt the 1st or 2nd quarter of the Rams game. Awuzie got hurt the Atlanta game and was out 8 weeks. Diggs breaks a leg against Pgh right when he was starting to get into a groove. Hill was starting to show potential and started to make some plays and gets hurt early.

The defense just couldn't get the band together. Early on the scheme was off and the defense was late to adjust. Hopefully, the next DC will be able to get the players to trust the system, quit freelancing, quit guessing, and play their roles and responsibilities. Healthy and playing the correct way will help tremendously.

There weren't many games when they all were together, just a few mid-season. Yes, ton of injuries throughout the yr, but simple mistakes that were happening early in the yr, were still taking place throughout the season. Many players who were more productive in prior years fell off the map. A good DC figures out how to put his players in positions to succeed, we didn't see that with Mike Nolan. He was forcing his scheme when he didn't have the right players for it.

I think his 18 and 19 seasons were more out of the norm. He played this year like he did in 16 and 17
He used to be a true #1 CB, but really fell off the last few years with the Vikings. I didn't follow him too closely, not sure if it was injury related or not.

Our defense is complete garbage. Donovan Wilson looks like Ed Reed on this defense. Our only good player is an over paid ego maniac.

The poor linebacker play is the problem because that is were the investments went into. The two highest payed players on defense is Tank and Jaylon. Neither player played up to their salary but Jaylon was a liability on the field. Teams game planned specifically to get Jaylon in coverage. The Football Team dinked and dunked us to death because they knew he could not cover. LVE was a middle 1st round draft pick who was 2nd team all pro his rookie season. He is now injury prone and has not played in a meaningful game in two seasons. Yes I blame these two guys for the problems with our defense. There job is to make plays and lead by example. They have done nothing in the last two years.
Then you will be here next year saying how much better they are magically playing. You will actually believe the gameplan, scheme and DL won’t be the reason for the return to form.

The key to Nolan’s defense was the linebackers and outside rushers. The pass rushers were average and linebackers were poor. Please watch the all 22. I love VanJaylon. They were the problem.

You do realize Nolan has been the defensive coordinator for one of the worst defenses in the NFL for 5 years straight now.

I guess we should have just kept him and acquired better Lbs and DEs.

come on man. Would you stop it..

Lol at some you fans. I never said anything about keeping him. The reality no coach would have won with this talent. Only two players make any money. The defensive coaching staff will not only be different but so will the talent. I guess a fool like you thinks Belichick can when with the Cowboys, linebackers and secondary aside from Wilson and Diggs.

The Colts don’t have the JAGs we do on defense. There isn’t a DC in the league that could get much out the Keystone cops we have.

The president of the Mike Nolan excuse crew is here.

You have zero clue about Mike Nolan’s defense and what makes it work. Mike Nolan doesn’t even know what makes it work yet somehow you do.

When was the last time a Mike Nolan defense worked? Somehow the defense with the same talent was much better a year ago than this year. I guess it’s because Jaylon cashed a check.

Really? Thats the problem with the defense?
Having 2 Lbers not play at a probowl level is why we were the worst defense in the history of this franchise? We gave up almost 500 yards because Jaylon and LVE regressed?

Seems like you are missing the real reasons.
Most do. The most common answer when addressing the fact that our D blows is that we need more CB's. We could have 6 Deion's on the team, and they'd still insist we need more CB's.
