Really feel bad for that cheerleader and her husband.
That damages their future! Especially if they wanted kids.

Again, the reason this has become so prevalent is because of the H1N1 strain. And frankly, I think it is way overblown in the media. It's being used to make a point for HC reform but since the PZ is gone I won't comment further.

Specifically however, Time reported recently that WHO and the CDC said that of the nearly 12,000 reported cases worldwide, most were not severe enough to warrant hospitalization and the ones that had sever complications were suffering from some other underlying medical condition.

12,000 cases? How old is the article? It topped 10,000 cases LONG ago.

This is a local story that's dominating the news. Jim Carrey (the comedian) has offered to help her financially. The problem is that he's a huge anti-innoculation freak, which could dissuade some people from doing the sensible thing.
I guess pro-innoculization is the only "sensible thing?"

Absolutely, especialy if you're in a high-risk group (very young, very old). What happened to her was exceedingly rare. It would be like eschewing plane travel due to the odd crash.

I really think that only the very young and the elderly should get this vaccine. They are the ones most susceptible to dying from the H1N1 other than the sickly.
other than that, it's just like the regular flu and it's over in a few days. Not worth the risk IMO.
I've never had one, my 23 year old son has never had on nor has my 10 year old and we'll never get one.

I've gotten the flu shot twice in the past 10 years. Each time, I come down with a cold or something.

Got the regular flu shot a couple weeks ago and now I have some form of chest congestion. It's going away with some OTC meds, but I hate being sick in any way.

I respect people's rights to get it or not get it, but for me, I probably won't in the future.

I haven't got one since elementary school. I rarely get sick *knock on wood* and have no use for it.

It is when you know McCarthy's stance which is likely Jims stance as well.

From what I remember she is against all of them because of the risk it would cause autism.

Not just the flu, but pretty much all immunizations.

And? She's spent more time with her autistic son trying to gain a better understanding of why he's afflicted. What does she have to lose, in the face of what our benevolent 'they', if it's discovered that they are at fault? You know what will happen in our litigation-happy society if these people were to admit the truth? Think Phillip-Morris in that specious load of horse manure.

Ridiculously enough, pregnant women are dissuaded from eating fish and mostly tuna because of Mercury content, yet the medical industry wants to inoculate infants with these things containing mercury as a preservative. The growth of autism over the last 16 years is ridiculous. The number of people I know with autistic children is just grossly ridiculous and can only be attributed to environmental issues, transcending habits.

I used to think steroid users had something to do with the problem, because I'd see sports figures doing commercials for autism awareness, and someone I know who's a juicer has an autistic child. Well, I can tell you the good number of people I know personally are not, nor casual drug users.

One thing that has inexplicably changed is the age which these kids are vaccinated. I was vaccinated around 5-ish in '73, when my immune system was probably more formidable and able to handle such things. Junking up some infant is patently ridiculous and unnecessary.

Jenny McCarthy is far from a quack, she's just doesn't have the control of perception the people most likely to be damaged by the truth of what she's saying do, if it is.

From what I can see, cases of autism as a percentage of births have declined tremendously in the past decade. I think you could make a reasonable argument that the growth in cases in the decade prior to that wasn't necessarily due to more kids having autism, but rather more kids being diagnosed with autism. In other words, an over-diagnosis.

I normally don't get the flu shot, as I have not had the flu since age 11 or 12. got it this year more because I am around a lot of kids and I visit a nursing home every Sunday, so it's for their sake that I do it. I don't expect to get sick or not sick whether I have the shot or not, as the percentages of the CDC picking the correct strain and the strain not mutating between the time the vaccine is mass produced and hits the market is not a big number.

That said, in most cases when someone gets sick right after the flu shot it's because they already had contracted something or had not yet built up the necessary immunity to prevent it (two weeks, on average), or as I said above they picked the wrong strain.

Still, while cases like this story are exceptionally rare, it is very, very sad and certainly she would have rather have gotten the flu than this (but how can you know this is a possibility?). Like winning the negative lottery.

I'm not sure I get you, when you say decade prior to that. Are you saying it was over diagnosed at that point? I don't know the numbers pertaining to birth rates, so I can't say how that might effect the numbers.

There's no mistaking an autistic child, and now they claim there is some sort of spectrum, where a child is on the spectrum of autism, but not full blown and it would be very hard to misdiagnose. Regardless of what it might be characterized as, there are a great number of children with some serious disabilities. If you look at the ingredients on the vaccines, it states that Thermarasol (sp?) may cause neurological problems and it's not at all out of the realm of possibility that introducing otherwise toxic elements are the problem.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me.
I've never had one either, I figured the flu is something you just got from time to time and let it work it's way out.

Pregnant women are dissuaded from eating fish because mercury levels that are safe for people are not safe for developing organisms the size of a pea. For the 1st couple months, the fetus is no bigger than M&M. That's why women should avoid fish. (FWIW, I don't think mercury is the main target of the cause of autism, not that I am suggesting you said that.)

But that shouldn't be an argument against getting immunized. Women aren't supposed to drink during pregnancy but that isn't an argument against alcohol consumption. Its an argument against ****ing up your kid as a result of introducing harmful products at the time when they are developing most.

From what I can gather, McCarthy's kid was born in 02' and it wasn't until 07' that she announced he had autism. Who knows when he was given shots but its unlikely to have taken place as an infant if it took 5 years before she came out with it.

Furthermore, there are some who think that her son may not have even had autism.

McCarthy is far from a quack because she isn't just a quack. She's a quack who people will listen to. She isn't anything close to a medical expert but because she can pull the face time on the right shows, people will give credence to what she is saying.

I hate needles. I got bit by a dog when I was a kid. That was back when they gave you shots in the stomach for 21 straight days or some psychotic torture. No way are you going to get me to willingly take one. I will if I have to.

I honestly do not understand people who get sick and go to the Emergency Room. They waste everyone's time with that crap.

Starve a fever, feed a cold. Clear liquids. Rest.

Ride it out. Be meaner than the flu.
