And it irks me to hear people on ESPN asking if he can be or just assuming that Dallas somehow deserves to always have Staubach like competence.
well look at our QB lineage...Eddie LeBaron was one heckuva QB...too bad he was on an expansion team and on the downside of his career. Then we had Don Meredith. Meredith was also a very good QB. He was followed by Captain America, Roger the Dodger. After Roger, we had another very good QB in Danny White. Then we had a short lull until Aikman. Once we got Aikman, the greatness returned. Then, we had another short lull until Romo. So yes, the Cowboys have had quite a bit of quality at the QB position for most of the franchise's existence. Even a scrub like Q led them to the playoffs once.
During their era:
LeBaron - top 15
Meredith - top 10
Staubach - top 5 (arguably top 2, along with Bradshaw)
White - top 10 (would have been top 5 had he gotten past 1 of the 3 NFC Title games)
Aikman - top 5 (3 SBs and winningest QB of 90s)
Romo - top 10 (statswise top 5, but overall team success drops him to bottom half of top 10)
