If he was so "great", how come the Skins' defense improved when he left the lineup this season??

In 9 games before Taylor got hurt, the Skins were giving up 313.5 yards per game, and 21.5 points per game... in the 7 games after he went out, they gave up 288.6 yards per game, and 16.7 points per game...

Generally speaking, teams don't show such significant improvement when they lose a "great" player...

Making grand proclamations such as that doesn't make you right. Taylor aside from the Pats game, Taylor didn't give up a single deep pass. All the weaknesses he'd exhibited in the past( falling prey to flea-flickers and playaction) no longer worked. The guy became a student of the game in the off-season.

What you are not taking into account is how well they played after making adjustments in the line-up after his death. Immediately after he went out of the Eagles game due to injury, McNabb started completing deep passes.

Funny, everyone BUT cowboys fans are saying he was a great player.

TO shorthands a couple of balls here starting at the 1:57 mark, including the time ST knocked him out of the game as an Eagle.

But the very best clip is at the 2:07 mark of http://youtube.com/watch?v=m-ajxojxJSc
where TO shows his true colors.

Maybe you are reading too much into that. One thing about TO is that he is tough for a receiver. I don't think he is scared of anyone. If ST was still alive -- and no disrespect -- and some reporter were to bait him, he'd be likely to say: "Who's that?" and then take it as a personal challenge to make ST a non-factor in the game. Now it is kind of pointless to argue this, since ST is gone, and TO is a player on one of the few teams that is still respecting the guys memory.

Now, the sample of cowboys fan you are using, hardly is enough to make that claim. But honestly, what kind of response do you expect? Y'all come onto a cowboys board, forcing the notion of ST greatness down people's throats, expecting them to agree with you, all the while bashing a cowboys player by saying, "TO was scared of ST." Now, if you look around here there are a few Cowboys fans who have ST signatures, out of respect, on this board. But the trolling by some of your Commander brethren is just going to make people stop wanting to honor his memory, especially if it is at the expense of one of our greatest players. In fact, some people might start hating the Commanders based on their fans; y'all will be like Eagle fans. ;)

Explain why the Skins' defense actually improved without him, then...

What happened over the past 4-5 weeks is that Williams slowly started abandoning the two deep zone coverages he was playing as base for the first 2/3s of the season and started implementing a more aggressive 4-6 approach that put more pressure on the corners, but allowed defenders to make more plays in their individual matchups.

It also helped that Marcus Washington got healthy again and that Springs, who was banged up early in the season, started to come around.

The emergence of a couple of youngsters on the defensive line also played a pretty big role. Second year tackle Montgomery has been playing on a high level and Golston taking productive snaps at DT has allowed us to keep Griffin fresh.

Chris Wilson, signed as UFA out of the CFL has also been a surprise at DE. He's been able to bring pressure of the edge on third downs and Carter on the other end on the line has been having a great season as well.

It's a shame what happened to Taylor, because there's no doubt in my mind that with him playing FS we could have Landry play Doughty's position in the 4-6 end be even better.

I think there are a couple of reasons. First, a team often bonds when faced with adversity, and I have seen a higher level of play from Taylor's ten fellow starters since he went down. Losing your best defensive player can focus players who try to pick up the slack.

There is an element of truth, and common sense in that argument... I'm not sure it explains the level of improvement, though... particularly not when Reed Doughty is such a significant downgrade from Taylor, if Sean really was as good as he's now being made out to be...

I can appreciate a thoughtful attempt to answer my question, though... props for that...

Taylor was never "great"... he was becoming GOOD, and might in the fullness of time have become great, but he certainly wasn't there yet...

The only reason he's getting props now is he died... people often revise history when that happens to a guy, they remember the good and ignore the bad...

Oh, I see-- it was lousy coaching by Gregg Williams prior to Taylor getting hurt...

Thanks for clearing that up for me... :D
