NFL GMs who are also owners:
  • Jerry Jones, age 81, (will be 82 in Oct) been GM of the Cowboys 35 years.

Average age of an NFL GM (without Jerry in count): 46.5
Oldest GM in league besides Jerry: Trent Baalke, Jacksonville GM, age 60.
Average length of tenure of NFL GMs other than Jerry: 8 years

Tom Landry was fired at 64 because the game had passed him. Tex Schramm was replaced by Jerry as GM in 1989 when Schramm was 68.

How many of those GM have won a SB? I count 3 or 4... just wondering.

if age is an issue with football knowledge, that explains a lot of the posts around here...LOL

Current GMs who have won SBs:
  • Brett Veach- 3 since 2019
  • Jerry Jones- 3 between 1992-95
  • Les Snead- 1 in 2021
  • Jason Licht- 1 as GM in 2020 (won 1 as Director of Player Personnel in New England)
  • Howie Roseman-1 in 2017 as Executive VP of Player Personnel in Philly in 2017
The other thing to remember is there have been over a dozen GMs who have won SBs who are no longer employed because they retired or were fired for not continuing to get results.

Age shouldn’t be a limiting factor but results certainly should be.

I wanted to add that none of these guys would still be employed if they were on a multi-decade Jones like run, but there are some organizations that may be content with just winning regular season games.

That’s fine for them, but this is Dallas and it shouldn’t be accepted here. If that sounds elitist - so be it.

I wouldn’t discriminate because of age to me it’s the mindset. Lack of aggression, sitting out free agency entirely. That’s been the mo for ten years, that’s Stephen’s philosophy, ten years ago he was 50.

This ain’t age, it’s incompetence

when 2/3 of the league have a GM under 49 of course many younger ones are going to be very successful, someone has to be, so I think the "you need a young one" is overrated. That said though, Id love to see Dallas turn the reigns over to someone, anyone

Jerry isn’t getting his Super Bowl.

He isn’t getting his two weeks of being the center of media attention.

They had two recent windows….2016-19 under Garrett. Refused to take advantage of Prescotts rookie deal.

MMs first year was a disaster due to several circumstances, the largest of which being Daks injury, but they had a nice shot each of the last three seasons and refused to supplement the roster properly.

Bottom line is they blew it by going cheap, and that’s all on the kid. Even if he does hire a GM, the proven loser philosophy will not change, as he acts as if that money comes directly out of his kids’ mouths.

That’s depressing.

Great post and great research and analysis. It’s definitely a younger man’s game since NFL GMs spend 12+ hours a day trying to improve their rosters since, as you said their job depends on it.

If we were making deep playoff runs, I could care less how old our GM is. But since those playoff runs are ancient history and there’s plenty of younger Jones boys to assume command, the future is raven black in Dallas.

Is it me or has Stephen Jones aged worse than David Lee Roth?
48662749-0-image-a-14_1633135786202.jpg

I don’t care what the fuhrer and son say, we won’t mk a deep playoff run until the team is owned by someone who really wants to win at all cost. Since the fuhrer’s primary goal is to be a rock star and be the face of the franchise, there’s little hope that the fuhrer or his son will ever sells the team. As a Philly fan told me 15 years ago “We love Jerry and hope he lives to be 100 because you guys are screwed!”.

It’s not so much the age of Jethro & Son which are such a handicap as the lack of amount they spend actually reviewing film and the 70-80 hours a week a VP or GM dedicate to their position.

But there’s a bigger reason their age hasn’t mattered the last 30 years since they took over total control of football operations and personnel after parting ways with Jimmy.

They have a conflict of interest wearing both hats as owners and running football operations. In order to continue the football celebrity passions Jethro pursues all that’s been needed is to produce a fairly competitive product and hype the Iconic Brand behind it .

Their only accountability is butts in the seats. And why Jethro stays front and center appealing to public perception. It’s been working . And I don’t see any reason for them to change until Jethro is gone.

It doesn’t mean they don’t want to win but not enough to get out of the way. Jethro was winning championships but that wasn’t enough for him. Why we continue expecting him to change baffles me.
