Confidence in Claiborne? 'Well, he's there'

We failed in our evaluation of Mo. It happens... Even great talent evaluators like myself fail once every blue moon. (I kid I kid...) All joking aside, I was VERY high on Mo going into the draft and stoked we got him. My tone has changed considerably since he's been at the NFL level. I sincerely hope he shows something but all I see are penalty flags flying on Sunday.

So did a lot of so-called talent evaluators.

I honestly do not know why Claiborne has not excelled; he has all the physical tools to be one of the best in the game. I personally did not like the pick (cost too much) but, Wonderlic aside, thought he would be a solid CB. This is his make/break year so I hope he makes the most of his opportunity.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the words, though. The inflection and the context are going to be meaningful here.

then your explanation renders hunderds of years of literature useless because of the lack of inflection. Sometimes, to use the tired cliche of athletes, "it is what it is."
(damn, I'm good)

Im just saying that there is no way that MoMo can be one the most physically gifted corners you have seen when players like Chuck Woodson, Revis, Peterson were or are on an entirely different level. Terrence Newman was a MUCH better athlete. Even Richard Sherman, who is 4 inches tallers, is only a tick slower in straight line speed and is actually faster than MoMo in the change of direction drills.

With his body type, the way he played the ball in the air, and those long arms, I really thought he would be a shutdown corner at this level.

Think how much better all that literature would be if we had the benefit of inflection? If inflection didn't matter, we'd have no need for smilies on message boards, for example. Just think how useful those are. Maybe we need to start using them for our coaches quotes.

“Well, he’s there:),” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said. “He’s our starting corner. That’s the confidence. He’s gotta go do it:p:D:p;).”

As opposed to:

“Well, he’s there:cool:,” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said. “He’s our starting corner. That’s the confidence. He’s gotta go do it.

Ok, as i read Spilane and Camus I will try to see smiles in between the words. I weep for the future.

Mayock's take: "One of the main reasons I think the Dallas Cowboys haven't been to a Super Bowl in some time is because of their secondary. Morris Claiborne is a special corner. He's got the best ball skills of any corner coming out in the last several years. This is a rare athlete."

The winner of the Jim Thorpe Award (given to the country's top defensive back) opted to forgo his senior year and enter the draft. He is huge for the position and has great speed. A very explosive athlete, Claiborne should easily press for a starting role wherever he lands. He covered top-tier talent in the SEC and is as polished as corners come. He has first-round value and shouldn't last long in the draft.
Analysis
Strengths
Claiborne is an aggressive cover man who likes to use his tall frame and long arms to get in receivers' faces, shock them at the line of scrimmage and disrupt their timing. When he punches, he makes his presence felt. He can run with his back to the ball at the receiver's hip using a press/bail technique and looks natural running with his man in-phase while still keeping an eye on the ball. Claiborne is such a gifted athlete with uncommon body control that he runs with his man fluidly up and down the field and still be able to break off at any time and get involved in plays coming across him. As a zone defender, he is simply an explosive athlete with length and can keep plays in front of him and react quick enough to meet the man at the ball. He is physical in run support and will have no problem coming up to tackle from the edge.
Weaknesses
Claiborne can sometimes be lazy with his technique. Working in off-man coverage, he has a tendency to get his pad level high in his backpedal, diluting the explosiveness that makes him so effective out of his breaks.

LMAO

carter looked completely different under rob ryan. Changing coordinators and defensive schemes has carter out of his element.

I suspect that Carter will be fine at the Sam LB spot.

We looked at the athleticism and overlooked the lack of intelligence.

Carter is plenty bright..at least for an NFL player. He hasn't shown up on the filed I the new scheme though.

Well put. I too was high on Claiborne. Did not expect his lack of toughness.

Claiborne is well on his way to making the Cowboys' all time bust team.

I am gonna give Claiborne this year. As stated in the other threads, the trade up sucked. But the player gets this year. He does look bigger, more stout. I am really bummed he has another shoulder separation, whether it's as bad as last years or not - the fact he will have to get it shot up means it's bad. Play well young Claiborne, injury or not - this is your last chance to prove the bust label wrong.
