Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith has taken the stage and he's sitting next to his close friend and former teammate Michael Irvin. Smith described the moment he was announced in the Hall of Fame Class of 2010 as "surreal." He got to share that moment with wide receiver Jerry Rice. The two men hugged as their names were announced.

Smith and Rice were emotional as they discussed the role their families played in their athletic accomplishments. Owner Jerry Jones had tears in his eyes as he listened to Smith talk about his career. Smith thanked Jones for "opening the door."

"Nobody could've written a script this perfect," said Smith, referring to the fact that he's going into the Hall with Rice.

Smith thanked a lot of people, including Irvin and fullback Moose Johnston. He closed by talking about his legacy.

"Consistency was the most important trait that I wanted to display," Smith said.

He also talked about his Florida roots and how important it was for him to have this announcement take place in his home state.

Very well deserved.

I was never a big Emmitt Smith fan but the guy was truly one of the best.

Sadly, Larry Allen is probably the only one left of that great era who will get in after this.

You can argue that he was the greatest without the O-line caveat.

Absolutely! Of course you can argue whatever point your heart desires. You could argue that the sun rises from the West or that the color green is actually blue (as seen by those touched with a bit of color blindness).

You could argue anything your heart desires...to do so until you're blue in the face (or actually green if you've been "touched" a little).

Doesn't mean you're right though. ;)

Emmitt Smith embodied what it meant to be a Dallas Cowboy! Today's Cowboy players should study his professional ways when it comes to how he approached representing Dallas.
:clap2:Congrats #22!

Perhaps but it is debatable. I love Emmitt Smith but let's be honest, he did have a great line to block and open holes for him. What sets him apart from other great RBs is his field of vision. This cat could find a hole where Mighty Mouse couldn't. Furthermore, in his heyday, this guy was an every down back and he was the best Cowboys RB at picking up the blitz...bar none!

I've often believed that if Emmitt Smith's attributes could be combined with Tony Dorsett's attributes, we'd have the greatest RB of all time.

and you can keep repeating ignorant *** comments about the offensive line at the time but that dont make you right........every player in the HOF has someone they can thank for helping them get there....this is the CONGRATULATIONS EMMITT THREAD.... the "is Emmitt the best all time discussion" is in another thread.....

CONGRATS EMMITT......you were and are everything a Cowboy should be

Explain to me what ignorant *** comments you refer to? Because I believe that I only mentioned it once in this thread (ya know this thread? This one here? The one I created?), where I gave credit to Emmitt's fantastic offensive line. But it was only used once in defense, so it kind of makes you look like the human version of an oxymoron.

And the bold part of your ridiculous statement represents that it "don't" (doesn't) make me wrong either.

....every player in the HOF has someone they can thank for helping them get there....this is the CONGRATULATIONS EMMITT THREAD.... the "is Emmitt the best all time discussion" is in another thread.....

You mean this thread here? You're not referring to MY THREAD are you? Ya know, the one where I took a moment out of my precious beer drinking time to hand out a plethora of accolades to the NFL's all-time leading rusher? Because that would make you seem rather foolish now, wouldn't it?

The itallics and underlined part of your continued ongoing ridiculous statement represents that you need to take issue with another poster who claimed Emmitt "was the best RB all time". It also represents that you come off as a dipswitch (but that's a private joke I share with people far more intelligent than you).

CONGRATS EMMITT......you were and are everything a Cowboy should be

Finally, something we can agree upon. It's nice to know that we share something else in common other than being carbon based life forms, huh?

Hmmm, there's a "missing link" joke that I wanted to add here but somehow lost interest in doing so. Oh well...

Congrats to Emmitt. Glad he didnt have any malapropisms. He was well coached for his interview on the NFL network. Floyd Little did have to correct him though when Emmitt referred to Ernie Davis as Ernie Banks. I can forgive that since he was prolly very nervous and emotional.

Emmitt had a lot of subtle ability. Slight head movement, a shoulder dip .... He had tremendously strong legs, and just a knack for making the exact right move at the right time. These were moves that not everyone saw. Everyone saw Barry Sanders' moves, but Emmitt's style of play better suited the fan who really, really watched and studied the game. He made it look so easy, that a lot of us didn't appreciate what he could do. He didn't run over people, but would-be tackles had a way of sliding off of him.

Here's to the most goal-oriented person I've ever seen and one of the best running backs to ever play the game. Congratulations, Emmitt.

Congrats to Emmitt, I've been watching football for more than 30 years and IMO he is the best of all times.

It's a shame that guys like Charles Haley, Darren Woodson and Erick Williams are not getting the recognition they deserve. In my book those guys deserve to be in the HOF.

Well, you were a bit off key when you directed your response towards me but I noticed that you bolded the part that I wrote in my reply that read, "But it was only used once in defense", this is entirely true as I used it in defense of my point. Emmitt's offensive line was one of the best units that I've ever seen (and I'm certain that others here would agree). The fact that Emmitt got in the HoF and his linemen didn't is a strawman's argument. You don't have to look any further than Troy Aikman for proof. IOW, how does a pro NFL qb and rb on the same team at the same time get inducted into Canton on the first ballot? Answer: They had a hell of an offensive line. Now this doesn't take anything away from Emmitt's greatness. The OL were the catalyst that provided him with the opportunity - and Emmitt most certainly took advantage of it. But where his greatness lies is with his field of vision. The cat knew exactly where to run to maximize the most yards gained at the line and in the open field. And he was definitely the best 3rd down back we've ever had. For such a little guy, he packed a wollop when it came to blocking.

Regrettably, I was a bit harsh in my response to you last night and for that I apologize. It's just that I get enraged at this time of the year when my team isn't in the Superbowl (and knowing that they damn well should have been). Still, it's a perfect example of a kid trying to get a drink of water from a fire hydrant that's akin to my "excessiveness".

Whoops! I just had a flashback of a Jackie Smith moment so I better stop now before I break my computer.
