People are already lining up at the McKale Center to hear President Obama.

^^^This thread has had very little to do with politics. Keep it that way. I give you this as information, it is not an invitation to share your opinion of our President.

I hope the tone of the message is non-political...a focus on the tragedy and maybe a tip of the cap to some of the heroic efforts that happened too.

The US Constitution disagrees with you.

Might wanna read the first amendment.

No, your biased and twisted vision of the constitution might, but I am willing to bet the one signed by Washington and the rest was never meant to allow what those POS's are doing. THEY would not have considered this free speech; and frankly they are a lot more credible.

They can still protest but will have to do so away from the funeral service. We can implement a buffer zone by law and there is nothing unconstitutional about that.

Biased and twisted? I believe the law agrees with me, how is it biased and twisted? You're talking about generations of jurisprudence....... but hey, you think George Washington MIGHT have disagreed, so I must be biased and twisted. You're hopeless.

It's not just free speech, it's the right to peaceably assemble. Guess you could argue the definition of peaceably, but generally law enforcement has to allow them to protest until they begin disturbing the peace.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law emergency legislation to head off picketing by a Topeka, Kan., church near the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed during Saturday's shooting in Tucson.

Unanimous votes by the House and Senate on Tuesday sent the bill to Brewer. It took effect immediately with her signature Tuesday night. The new law prohibits protests within 300 feet of a funeral or burial service.

I wish it was 300 miles, but that 300' limit will probably work as a compromise with the whacky group's legal rights vs some reasonable semblance of common decency.

I agree. However I did hear a report last night that many citizens will provide a human buffer zone around the funeral site to prevent these idiots from disrupting the services.

This group of nut jobs is disgraceful

Pretty much. Thanks to a doctrine that allows reasonable “time, place, and manner” restrictions, it’s almost certainly constitutional.

Westboro Church Cancels Picket at 9-Year-Old Arizona Shooting Victim's Funeral

Published January 12, 2011

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A controversial Kansas church has decided not to protest at the funeral of a 9-year-old girl killed in Saturday's shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz.

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., says church members will skip Thursday's funeral of Christina Taylor Green.

Phelps-Roper was interviewed Tuesday by a station in Toronto, Canada, and is scheduled to be on a morning talk show Saturday. She says Westboro Baptist Church decided not to picket in exchange for the airtime.

Phelps-Roper says the group will picket the funeral Friday for U.S. District Judge John Roll and at the intersection where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others were shot.

The Arizona Legislature unanimously passed a measure Tuesday banning protests at or near funeral sites.

The Topeka Capital-Journal first reported the church's decision to skip the girl's funeral.

Okay, so I won't have to be there tomorrow and will go Friday instead. Unless my friend wants me to go with him to Judge Roll's funeral. He's really affected by it. Judge Roll could have given him 10 years. Instead his 3 year probation ends at the end of this month.
