Considering the lack of success, how is this team maintaining such a strong fanbase?

Because we are not fairweather fans. A true Dallas Cowboys fan rides with them no matter what happens, we may not always agree with each other or with what the team does, we understand that we have NO control over what decisions are made but we always know that they are made with success in mind even though it has not happen for a while but we are not as far away as people think

This is not meant to be a rant, but I would like to hear some opinions on this subject. Considering the lack of success , how is this team maintaining such a strong fanbase? Let's be honest, there are not any band wagon fans fighting to join up as fans and I have trouble seeing why younger fans pick the Cowboys as their favorite team . For us older fans, we have seen the glory years with Landry and Roger, later on it was Jimmy and Troy. Those memories are the only thing that keeps me hanging on. There has to come a point when the fans say enough is enough and the losing and disappointment outweighs team loyalty. What is keeping the fanbase together? I see no reason for a young fan to pull for the Cowboys unless they live in Texas or have connections to the organization . The injury excuses To be honest, the Cowboys have become mirror images of the Raiders or other teams that only have past glory to hold on to . What say you? What is keeping you a fan considering the disorganized mess that the Cowboys have become? I Gould never pull for another team , but I am at the point of losing all interest in the current version of the watered-down version of the NFL. Thoughts?

Reasons for strong fan base not necessarily in this order:
  1. Multiple super bowl wins and appearances to keep the old timers reminiscing and happy
  2. Huge market ( football wise) football is king in Texas. Up north you have other stuff like hockey ect..
  3. Other local sports franchise aren't that good. The stars are up and down ( a Dallas isn't really a hockey town), Rangers haven't won a championship since their inception and it might be a 100 years till they win. Mavs are ok but no chance of winning anything in the next 4-5 years. And soccer well it's for euros - but is cool I guess.
  4. Americas team - Cowboys will always be Americas team and always play on thanksgiving.
  5. Marketing- Jerry markets this team like no other owner can.
  6. Huge Hispanic fan base from Mexico. They love the cabelleros
  7. Good looking cheerleaders
  8. Heck, I've lived here my entire life there's nothing else but to cheer for the Cowboys.

If it didn't shrink the last 20 years, what makes you think it will shrink now that the arrow is pointing semi upward? Most people are just riding the wave of bad luck this year because they understand that "**It Happens" and they are in fact true fans. You sound like you are questioning your own loyalty to the team and if so, I urge you to jump.

I have never questioned my loyalty to this team. I have been a fan for over 45 years. I do question why a 30 year old would want to be a fan of s team that is in such a mess. I very rarely watch any NFL game other than the Ciwboys due to the salary cap and the lack of truly great teams due to free agency. The league is a pale comparison if it's former self. There are no more dynastys. As for the Cowboys, I want to see a light at the end of the tunnel , but I just can't see it at this point. If an older fan such as myself can't see it, how can these younger fans get emontionly invested without experiencing the success and Super Bowls that I have seen. I guess I don't understand what attracts these young fans to a mediocre team that has had no recent success in their lifetime. At some point the number of fans should decline, but that is just my thoughts on the subject.

Good points , some of the reasons are due to lack of options.

Its a microcosm of the nfl as a whole putting out an increasingly bad product. Momentum. The cowboys were great when the nfl's popularity exploded.

There are some regional reasons why the Cowboys keep getting more fans as well. I would think it was Wierd if someone who was born and raised in Dallas to root or choose the Minnesota Vikings as their " team". You usually root for the home team ( whether it's the hometown or home state team). Some surrounding states like Oklahoma and Arkansas do not have football teams, so they cheer for the boys as well. Finally, Texas is a big state with a huge population but only one Real football team to cheer for ( forgive me Texans).

Basically Jerry has a goldmine. Not a lot of competition in a state where football is king.

I don't follow baseball, but it seems like the Yankee fan base is going through something similar. Even though the Yankees have a huge advantage with money, they can't seem to translate it into championships recently. The Cowboys don't have an advantage because of the hard salary cap and parity in the NFL.

It's a fascinating habit. All of the drama just continues to change like a Greek tragedy.
We the fans at the coliseum thirst for more blood

Old farts like us have ridden the coaster. We are Americas Team and always will be for whatever it's worth. It seems to be worth quite a few loyal fans jumping on the coaster each year.

Like you said, there are no dynasty's. The biggest part of being a fan is being loyal. Why do the browns have fans? At least the Raiders have a cool persona and some cool colors? I have reached the point in my life where I have quit questioning why, because there is no rhyme or reason. Too vested in the Cowboys to change now so I accept their failure, but optimistically hope each year will be better. Just get on the roller coaster and enjoy the ride. If you don't someone else will gladly take your seat.

Because being a fan isn't a decision. I never chose to be a Cowboys fan.

But I don't want to wax poetic about fandom so the sensitive crowd can feet good while washing off the face paint for the final time this season. I'm a fan. I'll always be a fan. But the Dallas Cowboys as you knew them are dead and Jerry Jones committed the murder. If that doesn't infuriate you, we're not cut from the same cloth.

I can't say they'll never be able to reclaim the glory of their past and be known as perennial winners again but I can tell you it isn't happening as long as Jerry is alive. I'd bet money it isn't happening as long as the team is owned by that family.

So what do you do? Walk away? I can't. I can only hope I'm wrong or that I live long enough to see them free of this family. Maybe they can compete a year here and there in a bad league but the days of the Dallas Cowboys meaning sports excellence are gone and they aren't returning anytime soon.

All because of one man's ego.

Can't wait for the Jerry! chants in camp next summer. Go Cowboys.
Sad to say...my only hope is to out live Jerry and hope Stephen is smarter than his father. I'm 46 years old. Jerry's 73. I hope I only have a few years left of this purgitory.

The Dallas Cowboys have a very strong fan base because fans that experienced the glory years of the 70's are now in their late 40's to late 50's. This is the age that most Americans have their highest income during their working years. Therefore, the Cowboys have fans with a very strong buying power.

The 70's, reinforced by great success in the early 90's created fans that have been loyal for so long that so many aren't going to stop despite the mediocre results over the past 20 years.

Lol, in a way, we are a little like heroin addicts. We have experienced the euphoria of watching a dominant Cowboy team for an extended period of time. We are hooked. Now our dealer has us where he wants us. He can sell us less potent heroin and we will complain, but we can't stop going back to him for more, no matter how he much he dillutes our drug. We crave that same rush of the good days and we'll even believe him when he swears that, this time, our "stuff" is pure.

For me it was family...........growing up I remember sitting down on Sundays with my dad and my grandfather and all of us would watch the Cowboys play. So it kinda just took off from there and I have been a fan ever since. So no matter how bad it gets, Beast will still be a fan.

However, like others have said, this version of the Cowboys is not the most likeable group...........the majority of the players just suck and the coaching staff is laughably inept.

I often wonder myself. But my 9 year old is the biggest Cowboys die hard alive, and he has no reason. You should hear him deal with the haters. It's great. And we live smack dab in the middle of Seahawk country. My other kids 14-18-21 all wish i wouldn't have brainwashed them. They love they Boys too, but get mad at me all the time for doing it to them when they were little lol.

We were born Cowboys fans. My grandfather, my father, uncles, me. We can't stop. We wont stop. The Boys will be back AND do well. Either that, or we'll die waiting. As far as other YOUNG fans... that's why as well.

I tried to post a pic of a sperm cell with the Cowboys logo on it but it was way too big. Maybe just as well.

GO COWBOYS!!!! PURO PINC#&$ COWBOYS POR VIDA!!!!
