i know people change their minds about things from time to time and that's a normal and reasonable thing. I know there are different schools of thought on what we should do with Romo and what sort of compensation we should demand, if any or if he should be outright releases.

I personally see no upside in releasing him or giving him away for zero to minor compensation. It might be good for Romo but it's not good for the team. The Patriots would never do that.

I am curious to see if Romo is released or traded for a handful of magic beans and either Dak regresses or gets hurt, or Romo propels his new team to the super bowl if you guys flip your position and say why did we give him away for nothing.

You know it will happen if any of the above occurs. We have great depth at a position where there are not enough good ones to just get ONE on every team and we have two.

My position is and has been throughout that we should keep Romo as backup unless someone gives us a Rd 1 pick this year

I believe that Romo is healthy and is a top 10 QB in a league devoid of good QBs. We are morons to be giving him away just to make him happy

I couldn't agree more. There are no Romo substitutes. We are holding pocket aces. You don't fold pocket aces. You go all in on them.

The upside (barring any significant trade compensation) is entirely related to cap relief. The savings this year is not huge (but not insignificant), but the savings in the future is.

My ideal situation would have Tony taking a paycut and then the team having a legitimate open competition (ie not jist pretending to have one while their minds are already made up).

I was firmly in the Romo camp last season, but that was purely about playing the best QB. If that was still all that was an issue, I'd be firmly in his camp still. However, the salary cap is an issue now that has to be factored in. I still have doubts about Dak being what so many here have already annointed him, but I have hopes as well, and the salary cap savings are too significant to ignore outright.

hell, i'm all for letting Tony and Dak battle it out for the starting position. Dak had a great season but he hasn't done 1/4 for this franchise what Romo has done and I am also of the opinion that Romo is a top 10 QB

I love Romo but at the end of the day it's wins and losses. Dak got as far as Romo ever has in one season and there were several instances where Romo had horrendous performances that cost us from going further...this is not all on Romo but facts are facts.

It's time to turn the page, releasing Romo gets us closer to the time when he is off our books. You don't tie up 20M in a backup, it doesn't matter if you have to pay anyways. I would suspect the locker room would think it is odd that a guy holding a clip board is making more than anyone on the team. You also don't want to have your starter looking over his shoulder.

It's time to turn the page for our franchise. I wish Romo got a chance to get a ring with us but the time has passed.

If Romo doesn't want to be a backup, he can just kill any value he has by leaking he is going to retire. He has more leverage then most realize.

I personally see no upside in releasing him or giving him away for zero to minor compensation.

The only upside, and it is minimal is that you move on. You close the book. This is Prescott's team and you move on. There is no ghost of 8-8 seasons past to wish you could replicate. Prescott needs to be allowed to lead the team. Can't do that looking over your shoulder at the Owner's adopted child.

In theory, yes, you keep him on the roster and create competition. But in real life that rarely works out.

This is one of those situations where theory makes sense until you actually compare it to the reality. We don't have a strong enough team and there is so much scrutiny around this team, you have a big problem the first time Prescott struggles.

It might be good for Romo but it's not good for the team. The Patriots would never do that..

Belichick got rid of Bledsoe. Problem we have isn't Romo. It is our owner/GM who is in charge of the decision making and is directly accountable for the fact he cannot be adequately marketed and sold as he should be. The Patriots would never try to think they could trade a player that was mortgaged several times over. That is the problem.

The issue is unless Romo takes a pay cut he is gone. The money we save can go to helping this team. I'm a Cowboys fan first, any and everybody should be on notice. You can't stay healthy or be available you will be replaced.

there is enough cap space to do the offseason without making a move on romo.
if there is no good deal, keep him past june 1.
there is always the option to cut (1/2 dead cap goes to 2018) etc.
in the season, when 1 or more qbs go down, romo value goes up.
you risk 12m in dead money, you could gain an important asset, and you have the best backup to boot.

Ah, another thread with people arguing pure theoreticals
Cool

Unless the FO comes out and says if they have offers and exactly who they are from and for how much...we KNOW nothing.
And unless Romo tells us what he willing to do, we also KNOW nothing. Many thought he should have retired already, so what be be his threshold.

Until we know these thing, this is all peeing in the wind and trying to start internet fights.

For me....I want Dallas to find that sweet spot where the maximize their return without reaching is threshold to say time to hang it up.

Denver and Houston among others, received a 3rd round compensatory pick.

They can offer that pick in a trade and I believe Romo has already stated, that he's willing to renegotiate his contract as well.

anybody that really thinks Dallas would release Romo can be defined in one word and thats dense. In this forum theres a word everybody uses and its mediot. But they gobble up made up stories fast and post on here in panic mode preaching how its fact, But just 2 to 3 posts earlier they were preaching mediot.

Put your laptop, tablet, phone down...because u played yourself

My solution

If he wants to stay he takes a huge paycut and if he wants to leave he still gets paid but we don't get killed on the cap and get the cap space when we need it in the Spring......if we trade him before June 1st there is nothing we can do about the 19.6m cap hit but at least it will be off the books forever

DAL signs Romo to a new 3yr/21m contract.....they take the 14m he is owed for 2017 and guarantees it plus another 1m for a total of 15m guaranteed ...... that comes in the form of a 1m base salary in 2017, a 12m option bonus in 2017 and a 2m base salary in 2018 .... that reduces his cap hit from 24.7m to 15.7m

Option bonus 12m due Sept 1st
................Base...+.....old bonus..+..new OB..=...Cap hit.............old Cap
2017------ 1m...............10.7m..........4m.............15.7m................24.7m
2018*------2m................5.7m...........4m.............11.7m................25.2m
2019*------6m................3.2m...........4m.............13.2m................23.7m

*if he is traded, salary jumps to 10m for both 2018-19 and he gets 250k per game roster bonuses

That makes it a 2yr/15m deal if we keep him as the back-up

It means he makes 3yr/41m if we trade him with 23m guaranteed
We can trade him anytime after June 1st 2017 and get top price since the new team will have control for up to 3 seasons......his 13m compensation for 2017 is very fair and we get immediate and long-term cap relief

Romo is not going to be in Dallas.

He doesnt want to be the backup.
Dallas has moved on with Dak.
He's not going to reduce his cap to be nice.

When did Romo have 11 straight wins......I don't remember him doing that or better

When did Aikman? When did Staubach? When did Meredith? When did White? When did Morton? When did any Cowboys QB?

The answer is none of them. No Cowboy QB won 11 in a row until last seaon. Their 11 game winning streak prior to this year was Meredith 5 in 1968 and Morton 6 in 1969.

I am all for and think we should trade Romo, but if your standard for what a QB has done for the Cowboys is what you listed above, then I suppose you think no QB has done anything for this franchise until last year.
