My solution

If he wants to stay he takes a huge paycut and if he wants to leave he still gets paid but we don't get killed on the cap and get the cap space when we need it in the Spring......if we trade him before June 1st there is nothing we can do about the 19.6m cap hit but at least it will be off the books forever

DAL signs Romo to a new 3yr/21m contract.....they take the 14m he is owed for 2017 and guarantees it plus another 1m for a total of 15m guaranteed ...... that comes in the form of a 1m base salary in 2017, a 12m option bonus in 2017 and a 2m base salary in 2018 .... that reduces his cap hit from 24.7m to 15.7m

Option bonus 12m due Sept 1st
................Base...+.....old bonus..+..new OB..=...Cap hit.............old Cap
2017------ 1m...............10.7m..........4m.............15.7m................24.7m
2018*------2m................5.7m...........4m.............11.7m................25.2m
2019*------6m................3.2m...........4m.............13.2m................23.7m

*if he is traded, salary jumps to 10m for both 2018-19 and he gets 250k per game roster bonuses

That makes it a 2yr/15m deal if we keep him as the back-up

It means he makes 3yr/41m if we trade him with 23m guaranteed
We can trade him anytime after June 1st 2017 and get top price since the new team will have control for up to 3 seasons......his 13m compensation for 2017 is very fair and we get immediate and long-term cap relief

after listening to Jerry's 1 hour interview, i have come to the conclusion that jerry will either trade romo or hold on to romo waiting for a qb injury in other teams.

Fwiw, I won't pretend to know whats going to happen.
If anyone wants to predict the outcome, go right ahead. It would be just that...a prediction.
For some reason I was thinking we had a poll on this.

If we dont have one, I guess someone really wanting to document some sort of prediction could create a poll.

And King Jerry holding court with a bunch of reporters in the Bang Bus is no way to evaluate what is really going on.

People are making a mistake and assuming a certain trade value exist for Romo.
They act like we are hurting ourselves if we don't trade him to the Browns for a 1st.

Ask yourself this....as good as Romo is when healthy how would you feel about him making it through a season today? Forgetting his huge contract...would you give up much for a QB that was physically broken the last few times we played?

And I'm a huge Romo fan. Huge.

i know, but he seems to have given up the idea of holding on to romo.
he now openly talks about release and trade when i could not see that a couple months ago

Jerry said a lot in the interview. Guess its up to the listener to decide whats real.
He actually did specifically mention a release, but with the gentlemans understanding that Romo would not play for rival.
He also said Romo has as much control control over this as he does--i assume meaning he has input (to some reasonable degree and not all or nothing, plus he can just retire and up his odds of not being in a wheelchair at 50).

Have to assume the goal is to get as much for Romo as you can (above and beyond the cap savings) if that is possible, but to a team thay he would actually play for vs retiring.

The 3-way horse crud trade with the Skins got shot down totally...and by default, so did any trade to a cruddy team like Cleveland.

No surprise there

I love Romo but at the end of the day it's wins and losses. Dak got as far as Romo ever has in one season and there were several instances where Romo had horrendous performances that cost us from going further...this is not all on Romo but facts are facts.

It's time to turn the page, releasing Romo gets us closer to the time when he is off our books. You don't tie up 20M in a backup, it doesn't matter if you have to pay anyways. I would suspect the locker room would think it is odd that a guy holding a clip board is making more than anyone on the team. You also don't want to have your starter looking over his shoulder.

It's time to turn the page for our franchise. I wish Romo got a chance to get a ring with us but the time has passed.

If Romo doesn't want to be a backup, he can just kill any value he has by leaking he is going to retire. He has more leverage then most realize.

You don't want a starter who is afraid of what is over his shoulder. Competition is good...always.

How many teams in the NFL have their pro bowl starting QB facing competition? Only teams that don't have a starting QB have competition at that position. Tony Romo went 10 years without competition. Dak is our starting QB, this is his team now.

You can say competition is good always, it sounds good but do you have someone come in and compete for Zeke's job?

Not if you respect the player

Keeping Romo is not a sign of disrespect. There is not a bigger Romo fan here than me and I believe that it is irrelevant why Romo wants. I am sure the Cowboys would have preferred to keep the money they owed him during the past two campaigns but they couldn't because they had a contract. Contracts go both ways.

Does the player respect the team?
Why is it ok for him to want to be released and the team get no compensation just so it favors him?

I respect the right to have an opinion other than mine, but the prior poster really makes no real world sense whatsoever. I agree with this post entirely.

My position is and has been throughout that we should keep Romo as backup unless someone gives us a Rd 1 pick this year

I believe that Romo is healthy and is a top 10 QB in a league devoid of good QBs. We are morons to be giving him away just to make him happy
It's not just to make him happy. It's to save 14m allocated for a backup while picking up assets.

It is possible to over play your hand.

Except we won't save $14 million because we will have to pay a backup.

I don't agree
There will get at least 2-3 games that the back up QB will need to win for us over the next 2 seasons that may determine whether we make the playoffs and/or playoff seeding. Romo will do that but Sanchez won't. That would be worth it to the team IMO. Also as you have heard time and again, cap room can be created. There are also several tests that want him.

It is pretty clear that if we release Romo without compensation it will be because Jerry wants to make him happy at the expense of the team.

When did Aikman? When did Staubach? When did Meredith? When did White? When did Morton? When did any Cowboys QB?

The answer is none of them. No Cowboy QB won 11 in a row until last seaon. Their 11 game winning streak prior to this year was Meredith 5 in 1968 and Morton 6 in 1969.

I am all for and think we should trade Romo, but if your standard for what a QB has done for the Cowboys is what you listed above, then I suppose you think no QB has done anything for this franchise until last year.
You totally missed the entire point.

When did Romo have 11 straight wins......I don't remember him doing that or better

When did Romo have Zeke and the best OL in football? He had something close in 2015 and won 12 games with a defense much, much worse than our 2016 team had.

If QBs are judged only by wins, Trent Dilfer goes to the Hall of Fame because he won a Super Bowl.
