Contract negotiations

Do we know what they tried to do prior to tagging him the first time? This is a player with a spotty history with injuries and was suspended. He was late arriving and they were right to wait and see about him and I believe they still are right except offering 20M for him is overpay.

And is Lawrence not the poster boy for "where were you when we needed you"?

All good points and all should have been taken into consideration "AHEAD OF TIME" and if they had decided he wasn't worth the price they should have traded him when he had maximum value.

They dug a hole and now they are trying to claw out of it because they never think ahead to the extent they should.

So you want to give guys still on rookie deals big $$$ now and destroy our cap space? Zeke still has another year and a 5th year option. Jaylon knows what the Cowboys did for him while he was injured and if anyone is going to sign for less than he is worth it will be Jaylon. Collins can be replaced via the draft, his play at RT has been average at best. Just because D_Law is being greedy does not mean everyone else will be!
Why would Jaylon sign below market contract after Mosley broke the bank with the Jets? Players and owners are both greedy.

Yep, they put themselves in this spot. And I wonder if they're not guilty of the same overestimation of his value in holding out for that kind of trade value? He has an inflated view of his worth and they may share that in trade compensation?

PIT couldn't get what Brown's real value in draft picks was because of his real salary. In order for the Cowboys to get him to sign and trade, they're going to have to settle for a lot less than they thought they'd get. And if they have to settle for a 3rd, they're better off than a comp pick because they can control where he goes. They would like him in the AFC.

Few teams seem to have learned from the master of the trade in NE. He knew he'd gone past the point of no return with Flowers and didn't even try a tag and trade with him. I think he talks to agents to get a feel for what they're going to want and if that doesn't fit in his formula, he'll trade them before they're up to get something out of it. He rarely goes above his ceiling at a position but when he does he's such a good judge of talent fitting into his system that he can make it work in the short term.

Exactly and he is only going to get more expensive if they wait another year to negotiate.
Jerry should just do the New England model. The Cowboys brand is the best. I would let them all play out their contracts. Especially Dak, Tank, and Byron. Good players but we can win without them.

New England often trades away assets when they decide they are unwilling to sign the player for what that player wants.

The difference is those three players negotiated fairly. They didn't decide to play injured. They didn't increase their asking price after their initial one was met.

The problem with the Lawrence negotiations isn't the Cowboys, it's DeMarcus Lawrence.
Never has words been spoken more true.

The front office needs to get pro-active and think ahead. This belief that deadlines create agreement is backfiring.

RIGHT now they should be working the next contracts for Dak, Zeke, Byron, LCollins, Cooper, Brown, Jaylon and any one else they are going to try to re-sign. Extend them early when possible and if they demand too much put them on the trading block. This history of getting nothing for Ware, Dez and others they have had to let go while they still had value is hurting the team. Trade them while they have maximum value when they are unsignable at reasonable cost.

It is too late for Dlaw. Put him on the trade block now. If no one wants him then let him play out the tag and get the 3rd rd comp pick when he leaves. They should have re-signed him 2 years ago when he would have been a fraction of the cost.

You can't pay every player the highest salary at their position.
I have to agree. I don’t think we knew what we had in DLaw two years ago because of the injuries and suspension. Let him play on the tag or trade him. Will our defence suffer if we let him go? Sure will, but signing a player to KMack type deal will also cost us players in the near future.

You can't win without a franchise QB. You talk about the Patriots way of doing things.......notice Brady is still there and before you say it no I'm not saying Dak is Brady but he is a franchise QB.

He can't do the NE model, he doesn't have Belichick and couldn't keep his hands out of it.

The combination of being able to let players go and replace them along with evaluating players to fit what he wants to do is unmatched by anyone in the cap era. And he's pretty bad at drafting DB's but realizes that and has learned to overcome it. He's very selective how he uses FA and there's little pattern to it. He's not only the mad scientist but an unpredictable one.

Jaylon is a down to earth guy. He plays for the love of the game, money is just an added bonus. He is also loyal and thankful for everything JJ has done for him. There is not a greedy bone in the mans body.

Not to mention his past injury will be on every teams mind!

Dak is not a franchise QB. I dont think Goff is a franchise QB. You can win with good football players and coaching. Foles just won a Superbowl.

That is why right now is the time to negotiate Daks contract. Offer him what he is worth and if he wont agree to it then trade his azz prior to the draft. Every player should be treated this way.

Dak is a franchise QB and that's just fact.

Can you win a Superbowl without a franchise QB, sure but it's not the norm and you have to have a great defense and a pretty good offense surrounding him. Bears, Bucs and Ravens proved that but not many other teams have.

Dak is a good QB. I would not break the bank on him.

He is worth 25-28 million and he will get it. Problem is if they don't sign him then next season that number will be 30 million or a little more. The longer they wait to sign him the more it will cost.

They need to sign him before Wentz and Goff get huge paydays

Can you imagine this board if Dak gets 30++?

In my humble opinion, when a player incorporates a "money" gesture into his on-the-job celebration it portends poorly for a fair contract negotiation.

This will likely be Zeke's last year in Dallas. He may have 2-3 years left of great play. Let someone else pay a kings ransom for a rb.The other guys you listed are a must have...except for Byron.

Why would this be Zeke's last year with the Cowboys?

That does not make sense.
