I know this is putting the cart before the horse a bit but it's a fair issue IMO. I can't find a clear market value but have seen $4-5M range. That would put him in the same range as Brissett, Darnold, and Mayfield. It's likely going to come down to how we are willing to spend to keep Coop from possibly replacing Chase Daniel as Herbert's backup. Daniel is not only a free agent but word is he may be retiring. Who you think Kellen's pushing to help Herbert and the Charger's offense learn his system? In other words, Coop's $4-5M value to the Cowboys can easily be $6-8M with the Chargers. So we could very be in the market for a vet backup.....

  • A few names I like .......Mike White, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold ( all should be in $3-6M range )

  • One position that definitely makes sense for the Ravens to upgrade in free agency is backup quarterback. In a more recent breakdown, Zrebiec discussed why it would be important to sign an established backup. The past two seasons in Baltimore have ended with Jackson on the sideline dealing with injury. In the 12 games that Jackson has either sat out or left with injury in the last two years, the Ravens are 4-8, not including their lone playoff loss without Jackson. Teams like the 49ers and Cowboys displayed this year the value of having backup quarterbacks capable of winning games. Pushed into play due to injury, backup quarterbacks Cooper Rush, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Brock Purdy went a combined 16-4 in their regular season starts. While Rush is available, as are other options like Sam Darnold, Jacoby Brissett, and Andy Dalton, Baker Mayfield may make the most sense. Mayfield is an affordable option after flaming out a bit in Cleveland and Carolina, but he showed he still has the ability to compete in the waning games of the season with the Rams. He’s fairly young, having been drafted the same year as Jackson, while still experienced, and he specifically has experience in the AFC North. Mayfield also has a formidable talent for running the ball that wouldn’t require new offensive coordinator Todd Monken to switch things up too much when he’s in. Whether or not the former division rival is the answer, it’s become clear that backups Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown can’t carry the team when Jackson is absent.

The NFL world would explode if they let LJ walk and signed a guy like Darnold or Mayfield. BUT as far as team building goes I wouldn't pay LJ either.
My list of overpaid mega contract QB's:
Dak, Cousins, Tannehill, Goff, Wentz, Watson /bc of the PR nightmare/
(soon to join this list-- LJ and Hurts)

FWIW Dak is not that much better than Rush. Better arm but slower decision making.

Imo, we'll likely re-sign Cooper Rush and Wil Grier.

- Rush is based on his surprising win streak in Dak's absence as he is now a familiar (and trusted?) with McCarthy.

- Rush will now be under tutage of Schottenhemier, McCarthy,..and it remains to be seen if a QB is officially announced and confirmed.
Cooper will working under a new offensive approach per West Coast- as will all of the QBs.

- i expect another Mike White, Ben DiNucci type developmental project pick in the late rounds,... not a QB pick in the early rounds.

I doubt the Chargers value Rush in the $6-$8M range as they have some serious contract issues to deal with currently (as well as Herbert's new deal upcoming) such as WR's Allen ($21.7M cap hit 2023) and Williams ($19M cap hit 2023), TE Everett ($8M cap hit 2023), LB's Bosa ($31M cap hit 2023) and Mack ($27.4M cap hit 2023), and CB Jackson ($17M cap hit 2023).

With Mack having $9M in dead money the Chargers could look to trade him; Allen has $6.9M in dead money so another trade or release candidate while restructuring Bosa and Williams can create a significant amount of cap room; Everett has only $4M in dead money so he could be a post June 1st candidate.

The point is do not be surprised if the Chargers look to sign Rush to a back-up QB deal in the $3M/year range for 3 years while also possibly targeting TE Schultz (to replace Everett and his middle-of-the-road 550 yards receiving) for a deal averaging $12M/year (which would allow the Chargers to look at moving on from WR Allen, saving between $14.7M-$18M depending on if traded or released, while looking at a WR in free agency like JuJu Smith-Schuster).

+1......I guess the point I was trying to make is I see the Chargers valuing him way more than the Cowboys. In other words, his value in helping Kellen install his system is worth a bit more than the Cowboys might offer. I can see Kellen standing on the table for Coop.

Jerry would never bring in a big name QB with talent to rival Dak. We don't want 2 capable QBs. What we want is QB1 and someone perfectly ok being QB2 and never aspiring to more.

rush sucks. no team in their right mind would pay him more than vet minimum and they would have to be desparate to do so. anyone thinking Rush is any good, needs their head examined. period.

Sign Baker Mayfield, draft Clayton Tune with one of those 5ths.

I know Baker isn't a great QB, but he could be a good backup to get you through the 3-4 years when Tune is ready to take over.

If Rush leaves, which I think is likely. An organization serious about team building should look at someone like Mayfield or Jimmy G. I would be shocked if we do.

The Cowboys need to draft a QB. I would really like seeing one drafted Day 2 if a good one falls to us.

The last nearly two decades, this organization has not been good about making the QB work to stay the starter. Dak needs to feel some pressure.

When Tony Romo was the guy, he was often lazy in his off season prep. (Apparently much like he is as a broadcaster) I know a guy who used to play in a church basketball league with Romo during the off-season back around 2012. He said he was surprised how out of shape Romo was. Dak seems to stay in very good shape but IMO he needs to feel some heat this off-season to up his game.

We should be drafting a QB more often. You never know when one of them can turn into something special.

Romo used most, if not all his off-season to play golf but he always said he worked on a little tweak in his but would never tell us what it was. I'll always believe his ambition to also be a professional golfer led to his back issues as a football player.
