Cord cutters - what's your setup?

I don't have great access to different internet providers, so I was always stuck on some tv package. Recently I was able to get a deal enough to allow me to cut the cord finally with TV. So I'm coming to my people for advice!

1. What antenna do you use? (Have the Mohu Leaf, its okay, I'm curious about the Mohu Curve)
2. How do you watch live TV if not over the air?
3. Do you have any Media player / HTPC setup and if so what is it (e..g Kodi, Plex, Roku, Fire, HTPC, etc...)?
4. If you use Kodi or Plex, what channels do you use?
5. Any advice on Kodi vs Plex (Time Warner gave me a free Roku, so have Plex but you have to have your PC running as far as I can tell, don't think Kodi/XBMC is like that)
4. What are your sources for finding content (reddits, etc)
5. Anything else you can teach?

I live in Manhattan, so factor that into things like antennas, please.

Thanks!

I use the RCA top of the line antenna. Tried the leaf but it didn't work as well in my room. I've noticed the signal is sensitive to how the power and signal cords are routed.

I have accounts with tivo, youtube, sling, prime, hulu, vudu, and Netflix.

I stream with the fire box and TiVo. I ended up the fire because the NFL draft was coming up and I wanted to watch it and Sling offered half price on the fire if you subscribed for three months.

I have a blu ray player and have started building up a library of mostly television shows on DVD and Blu-ray discs. When you consider how much a cable or satellite subscription costs you can purchase a lot of content with that same amount of money. I just bought complete seasons of shows for $7.50, $7.50, $6.00, $6.00, $7.00, $7.79 and a box set of seven seasons for $29.71. I just bought the first season blu ray box set of The Flash for $15.00 and it included HD streaming rights on Vudu.

I like the streaming services but a lot of times I get interested in a show and get partly through it and they take it away.

I haven't decided which HD video I like better, the antenna or blu ray disc. The uncompressed HD video from the antenna is pretty spectacular. As far as Audio goes, the Blu-ray discs are the best by a wide margin.

I pay 30.00 a month for Playstation Vue obviously on my PS4.

It's more than enough for me.

Hardware
  • I have several Roku's
  • A Sony Smart TV (Google Android TV)
  • Laptops / PCs
  • Tablets
  • Phone
I'm in an apartment until I buy another house, so no HD antenna for me right now.

Apps and Services:
  • Netflix
  • Amazon Prime
  • Sling TV (for the Olympics will cancel afterwards)
  • Plex (my buddy has more content than Netflix)
  • HBO Now (when GoT is on, otherwise I cancel it too)
  • Crackle (sometimes, the ads can be annoying, but they sometimes have content I want to watch)
  • MLB.tv
  • NHL Center Ice
  • Obviously, NFL Sunday Ticket is becoming an streaming only option, but I haven't yet got it. I used to watch it for free via overseas VPN, but they removed that free option
  • NASA TV

Actually, there are several channels you can get, but many come and go. There is also Hulu, but I find them mostly for current active TV shows and I just don't really watch many of those.

That seems like a lot of work and more money than just regular cable or Direct Tv

My TV bill (minus the sports packages) is all of $12/month when I'm not watching GoT or the Olympics.

I'm pretty sure that is cheaper than anything any cable or sat TV company offers. There is no work in using my Roku / Google TV. I change channels just like you do. The only difference is my shows are always "on demand" Not just what's currently showing. So my shows are always on the air when I have time, not when the TV guide says I have to make time.

What? Netflix and Amazon Prime are close to $20 alone unless you're splitting them.

Antennas Direct DB8e mounted about 25' in the air. One side pointed northeastish, the other southeast.

Tivo Roamio OTA for recording broadcasts.

Roku with Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime (was already a member) and Playstation Vue. The first three I had before cutting the cord, only added Vue.

I setup a NAS and made copies of all my DVD's and stream them to the Plex app.

Just Roku with Netflix, lotsa free Youtube, no antenna yet, sometimes plug my laptop in via HDMI. I may change at some point to something that supports Kodi, but I do like Roku as far as it goes.

X1 and PS4 w/Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu and an HDMI cord for laptop streaming (watching live events / torrents of movies, shows not available on the other apps or new movies just released, etc).

My setup isn't that different from what others have posted.

One thing is that my Youtube content intake has gone up tons. I have a lot of hobbies (some would say, too many - and by some, I mean my wife) and I've caught the bug about watching Youtube content on them. There so much stuff out there, and as you start subscribing to more and more stuff, there's just a steady stream of new content to check out every day.

I don't watch over the air content so I don't have an antenna.

My setup at the house is a TV in the living room which has an Nvidia Shield TV plugged into it as well as a Steam Link for gaming via my PC in the office. I also have a TV in the master bedroom which has an Amazon Fire TV plugged into it.

For movies/TV, I torrent via seedbox. I have Plex Media Server running on the seedbox and I stream directly to my set top boxes here at home which are running Plex. It's all automated via Couchpotato and Sonarr so I have a nice frontend to add movies and television and I always have the latest episodes downloaded of the shows I watch.

For sports, I have MLB.TV for streaming and I use NFL2GO for my Cowboys streaming needs. MLB.TV has its own app for Fire TV and Android so that's easy peasy. For NFL2GO, I run it as a Kodi plugin.

Netflix 7.99
Hulu 7.99 (only for criterion edition movies, & south park)
Amazon Prime 99.00 for the year (costs bundled with shipping benefits)
Leech off my parents "Watch Fios" for espn, hbogo, etc... (which is fair, they do the same with my netflix, hulu, & prime)
I have a chrome stick and Fire Stick.. don't use them often... someone jailbroke the FS, but it stopped working and I have yet to reload kodie...
& Im eligible for the streaming option of the NFL ticket... will order that before the season go.

I can honestly count the amount of times on two hands (maybe even one) that I watch TV in a week... don't have much time, but also not much interest honestly.

That's quite a setup, I need to really educate myself more. I just put plex on roku and started messing with that. Trying to figure out which unsupported channels etcb are best. A lot seem to not be working. So much to learn.

Definitely need to learn what you're saying about seedbox, couch potato and sonarr....

What are you running kodi on?

Youtube has been a rock... with music, history, general information...
I watch a lot of youtube... used to make fun of my nieces and nephews for their intake... now I'm right there with them.

need to learn how to unplug a drain?... go to youtube
want to know how an engine works? go to youtube
want to research new camera reviews? go to youtube
want to learn how to improve your swimming techniques? go to youtube

etc, etc, etc.....

Just wanted to thank everyone for contributing, you all have some cool setups. Somehow I knew @Sam I Am would have a setup, haha.

Lots of learning to do. Don't want to have a dedicated server running as I underrated plex requires, so I may look to kodi.

Suggestions on the low hanging fruit approach are welcome. Thanks!
