This sounds to me like Jerry has wanted McCarthy back from the start, but McCarthy's new agent is demanding market value money and Jerry's trying to cheapskate on his contract offer while using the idea of hiring someone else as leverage.
Agreed.

I don't think this means Mike is definitely coming back so much as Jerry wants him back--but on a deal that is favorable to the team.

If Mike doesnt sign whatever insane offer Jerry is concocting, then Jerry can legitimately say they tried to negotiate and couldn't come to terms. It'd be a lot harder of a negotiation for JJ if Mike is out there fielding offers.

If the options were Jason Garrett, Dave Campo and Urban Meyer, this board’s usual suspects would still be saying any would be better than McCarthy.

I wanted a change too but I’m a realist and the list of coaches available that are better than, or even equal to, McCarthy is very short and only a couple of them make sense here.

This board and every other board for other teams everywhere can say “but, but, but, Ben Johnson!”

But, but, but, the guy could probably displace coaches with a shot at the Super Bowl. He’s not coming here or maybe anywhere else.

So, go on and bellyache about Jerry and Stephen and ignore reality.

We need a kickbutt OC that McCarthy will trust to call the offense while he runs the team, which he’s actually pretty good at.

Any chance Mike can just quit and interview? I mean he must have money. Pride is more important than Jerry money.

At this point I'm just resigned to the fact that this team will never have success with this imposter and his dopey son at the helm. They just can't get out of their own way. These incompetent morons just keep throwing the same crap against the wall and expect it to come out differently. How is this team supposed to improve with the same QB and HC and no attempt to even pretend free agency is important to roster development?

McCarthy did absolutely nothing this season to earn the job going forward. Nothing. Nothing! So if that is the case they either already decided before the season that they wanted him back or they can't let go and/or make changes because they are paralyzed by their inability to make a decision and instead just keep putting it off season by season and stay as close to status quo as possible. It's why they don't spend money on free agents and covet their own players like a child with a poster of his favorite player on his wall. So, If they decided before the season t keep him they are dumb for not re-signing him then OR they tried to play mind games with him as if it was going to be some kind of motivator and instead just created a year long uncomfortable situation for him and everyone else and put an air of uncertainty around the team that really wasn't there. In addition they told the world that even if you don't have an extension you'll get (see Dak as well as they played it the same way). And if they didn't decide before the season they are morons because they are looking to reward and re-sign a guy who just was your HC for a horrible season in which you got your butts beat in badly more than once before injuries struck, who has continued to show he has no clue about time management, game management or any important game day decisions including play calling. Either way they are morons. Embarrassing Morons. It's just so hard to deal with these two destroying any hope of a successful season. I'm glad opposing fans came in droves to take over the stadium and I hope it embarrassed the heck out of the incompetent bring trust of this team. They got exactly what they deserve.

MM is staying folks.
Learn it
Love it
Live it

for sure. But I dont have to love it. I'm disappointed he's coming back, but not mad. The Cowboys are Jerry's toy and he can play with the toy however he chooses.

Yeah, Jerry is using the exclusive rights window to try out that incentive based contract idea lol. McCarthy did a smart thing by getting a new agent a la Dak getting France, so the agent can be the bad guy and get Big Mike his money.

Exactly and why I said if he allowed the interview MM was as good as gone.

What's disheartening is to believe we'd actually want a coach and let him go because of money that doesn't count towards the cap. If that happens Jerry will be absolutely roasted and he'll have a hard time escaping the "cheap" narrative.

There's no check Jerry won't write to win.

How many times does he have to tell you that?
I want to see that written on his headstone when he dies after having never giving up the GM role and without having made it past the divisional round of the playoffs for the rest of his life.
