It doesn't matter how you came about supporting a team. It only matters that you cheer for them regardless of circumstance. That determines the quality of fan you are.
I agree. I have a friend who is from right outside Cleveland. His teams are the Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers.
I have another friend who is from Boston. He likes the Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, and wait for it...Cardinals.
I personally don't feel anyone needs to explain their loyalties as long as they stay loyal to those teams. Many people do not.
When I was in 8th grade I was drawing a picture of Tony Dorsett in Art class. A kid in my class told me to put his last name on the jersey. I asked him if he was a Cowboys fan and he said he was.
The last game of the year the Cowboys were playing the Broncos who only had 1 loss at the time to the Cowboys 2. Suddenly he was telling me how the Broncos were going to kill the Cowboys. I told him I thought he said he was a Cowboys fan. He made some comment about Orange Crush and thought is was great smack. He backed the Broncos in the Super Bowl too.
After the Cowboys dominated the Broncos he was again a Cowboys fan. Loved them in fact. It should surprise no one that the next 2 years he was a Steelers fan.
I don't know where he is today, but I have no doubt he is a Packers fan. Those kinds of people are bandwagon fans. Not someone who fell in love with a team as a kid because they were winners and stayed with them. So I don't care at all if someone likes the Cowboys, Celtics or Lakers, and Yankees and the Canadiens in Hockey. Just as long as they like them in bad years too and never switch allegiances.
Bandwagon fans and fair weather fans are the problems, not who the loyalty is with.
