Plays like this are incredibly frustrating. If I had to guess, I think he was looking at the blindside rush splitting the all pro OT and our backup OG right at the split second Witten flashed open, as he moves right when he'd otherwise be setting his feet. That's not an excuse, because Dak needs to make that throw regardless, and the OLs need to block better than they did there with the game on the line.
And there is a microcosm into the offensive woes.
Offensive line is playing beneath its level.
Dak not as sharp as he was at the end of last year.
Poor blocking from our tight ends.
Zeke doesn't seem to be the same player although I felt this was his best game this year.
Offensive coordinator not as sharp and creative as last year.
Add it all up and we are a bit out of synch.
That said, 30 points should be enough in this league yet in our first four games that doesn't get it done twice now

A couple of observations, neither of which buys you a cup of coffee: Jaylon cannot handle getting blocked AT all by the C or OG. He must be protected by the interior DL. I see too many plays where he gets pushed out easily by a C of OG. Our DTs must tie up their guy and maybe another guy to protect him. Do we have a DT that requires a double team? NO.

Maybe he is a weak side LB in 4-3 after all. But does he have the feet to move and run? Hitchens will probably play when healthy.

M. Collins still cannot anchor and is a twitch guy first, anchor guy third. Do we have a NT size guy?

Sean Lee is the brains of the front 7. We are not world class when plays, but mental errors might be reduced.

JJ seems exicted about our 3 new guys in the back 4. While he is not a football evaluator, IMO, we should be open to playing Woods and Lewis-no headlines there.

Jaylon is not doing a good job of getting off blocks, that is clear. Irvin4life tries to claim that Smith has played better than Lee, but all you have to do is watch the tape and you see Jaylon jumping on piles 10 yds down the field.

Collins has been disappointing, and I didn't think I would be saying that. RIght now he is not even being an effective twitch guy. He is barely pushing the pocket at all. The guy we got from Green Bay is the closest in size and skill to a true nose tackle. He actually has not been that bad.

Mayowa has been flat out awful. I can't believe he is starting. I thought a bulb came on last year for him the last 6 games but he has regressed and is worse than he has ever been. Even if we get no pass rush from Charlton he would be better against the run, same with Crawford. Put Irving in at DT some with Crawford at RDE or vice versa.

Lee is the glue that holds the LB squad together. Without him they are just guys running around.

The young guys in the secondary give me hope. I am not as critical on Jones as some but he needs to be making some plays. Heath has taken a step back when we needed him to take two forward. His job has to be on the line the way Woods has played. I would keep Jourdan Lewis out there even when Carroll is healthy.

Yep. When the bad guys score on 9 of 11 possessions, it's hard to get to upset at just the offense. Though we also had the two turnovers...on on ST and one on an INT.

This is the stuff that gets teams beat in close games. It's got to get fixed. With the stability we've had around here the last several years, there really isn't a good excuse for it in the first place. Collins has been here for years, now. So has Green. I don't give the OL a pass for having two new starters. They have to play better. That lets Dak settle down and not worry about backing out of the pocket when he needs to be looking for opportunities downfield. The WRs who can't outrun anybody have to catch the balls that hit them in their hands. And we can't have the damn safeties falling down and biting on play action all over the place and making it easy on the bad guys. LBs need to cover.

I will disagree on one of your points. "Offensive coordinator not as sharp and creative as last year". He was never sharp last year he got lucky because the Offensive line was blowing out defenses and we were running the ball down their throats. It is easier to play when you are in front of the sticks than behind. Play calling with 3rd and 4 is a lot better and easier than 3rd and 10. His job was made easy it wasn't because he was creative. He is running the same plays this year as last year, and they aren't working. He fails to adjust, a big problem with this coaching staff. Offense has always been Vanilla under Garrett and Linehan, until that changes we are going to lose more games than win.

Andrew Luck is still a turnover machine who's ranked highly based on his potential.

But Dak, a 4th-round pick whose performance DESTROYED anything Luck has ever put on an NFL tape, is a lost cause. Hilarious!!

Dak will keep working and keep improving. I have no doubt about that. Romo wasn't the most polished passer in his first couple years either.

Was this a problem last year? I seem to recall he was less gun shy last year.

Yes, Dak played without anticipation last year as well. This year, he doesn't have all day to stand around and see the guy already open. This year he actually has to anticipate, and he's still having trouble with that.

He must improve in this area if he is going to be the long-term answer.

Dak played poorly, but on this play:

Pressure from Tyron's side forces him left a stride and backward. The window for this throw developed late and you can't have an incompletion. I'm going to give him a pass for not throwing to Witten, except he should have stepped up in the pocket to buy the one tick he needed.

I thought he did a better job last year of playing to the strengths of his rookie qb.
IMO they need to dial back on the let's make Dak a Peyton manning type field general. Get him outside the pocket more and make the defense defend the threat of the qb run without going full RGIII

dang do Jaylon know how to get off blocks? Wonder if putting sean lee back at MLB and Smith at weakside backer may be better for our defense. Also bench heath. Its bad when I am hoping for him to get injured lol.

anyone worried about Tyron Smith? Is it the LG play making him look this bad but man he is not really lock down on Dak blindside like he was last season.

I am, a bit. It's not just the LG play. He's whiffing more than he used to.

And apart from putting Cooper on Donald, which isn't fair to Cooper who's not remotely the same caliber of player, it's not the the LG spot has really be awful this year.

Whatever the problems with the OL, it's more than just with the replacement players. It might be the quality of defenses we've played early. With Von Millar and Aaron Donald being two of the very best DLs in the league, and the Giants and Cardinals lines both pretty good, but something is definitely up here early.

What some people call excuses, I call being analytical so you can focus attention on the deficiencies that have got to be corrected. Our OL seems to start slow for whatever reason, they weren't great at the beginning of last year either. We had a lot of the same posts through the first 1/4 of the season.

Green is playing a new position and so is Collins. I don't know if Collins ever played RT in college outside of maybe his first season, I'm too lazy to look it up.

The OL has to play better period. But, there are "reasons" why they have looked subpar. Now, we need to address the cohesion issue and hopefully they're giving the starting OL the reps needed against the looks they've struggled against to improve.

The defenses we've played might be the most talented first 4 defenses anyone's played to start the season. They should have handled it better, but that's a tough run even when you're playing like the OL was playing last year midway through the season. It's especially tough when those caliber of defenses have had an offseason to scheme against your offense and young QB.

We have some tough and talented lineman, I think getting their butts whipped might have actually been good for them in the long run.

A LOT of people felt that the defense would be better in the second half from a standpoint of learning to play together. There are a LOT of new pieces and we are still trying to see how they all fit.
Sounds like a convenient excuse for people unwilling to acknowledge the talent deficiencies on defense.

Everyone remember the tweet from Dak few years back? Something like "I'm done with Romo".

Dak's probably saying "No way I'm throwing that pass. I've seen Romo get intercepted too many times throwing it to the middle to Witt."

the defense only played bad vs Denver and a half vs the Rams. I'm confident by week 17 everything will be ok if we're semi healthy
