Cowboys’ Offensive Line Could Be Better in 2017

http://cowboyszone.com/2017/05/cowboys-offensive-line-could-be-better-in-2017.html

...The trickle-down effect of Collins playing either spot will be felt, but remember, either way Dallas will have two new starters on the line. However, throughout all the talk about which position is the right fit for Collins and the Cowboys, one sentiment from many outsiders remains constant: the team’s offensive line won’t be as good in 2017. Pardon me for taking a different approach, but I’m more of a glass half-full kinda guy. Truth is, the unit actually might be better than they were last year.

The object is always to get the most talented players on the field and La’el Collins is a big step in that direction. Doug Free was a better player than many want to give him credit for, but he did have some issues in the passing game last season and Collins has the potential to be a better tackle. Potential is the key word, but since we’re being optimistic, he has the youth and athletic ability to be a dominant player. Collins doesn’t have the experience of Doug Free, but he’s got a pretty good base from playing tackle at LSU and he has played at a high level in the NFL during his first two years.

With Collins at right tackle, the left guard spot could be taken over by Jonathan Cooper. Again, if you’re trying to get the best talent on the field, the former first-round pick would go a long way to doing that. Cooper has had his issues finding his groove since he entered the league, but he has flashed some skills and he now gets to work with Frank Pollack, who is one of the better line coaches in the business. He’s still young and has time to figure it out, especially playing in-between two All-Pro players in Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick. Speaking of Smith, remember that he played hurt almost all of 2016 with neck and back issues that zapped him of some of his ability and strength. With Smith returning to full health this year, expect him to get back to a more dominant form in 2017...

The Cowboys had a RT that couldn't start on most college teams. They can definitely improve.

Sadly they'll never be as good as those glorious 7 games in 2014.

The talent level on the o-line is definitely better. It remains to be seen if that turns into a better line. A lot will depend on health and coaching.

Leary, as solid as he was, wasn't exactly irreplaceable. He may be missed. He may not. My guess is the 2017 Leary won't even be as good as the 2016 version anyway.

I'll take the bet on the seven game stint...as this offense will grow even more.

Speaking of the oline, if Theaker impresses and makes the team, who gets cut? Bell or Cleary?

He was good. But you don't overpay good when you've got great waiting for a deal on the other side.

Pay a premium for the top guys. The others leave if someone offers more than they are worth.

It's not a stretch at all to think Cooper/Collins will be better or at least a push compared to Leary/Free. I would rather have a better ROT than LOG and Collins provides that over Free.

The rest of the offensive line will be strong in running the ball, and very solid in pass protection. I don't have a problem substituting Cooper. He has good mobility and four years or experience, even if previously marred with a basket of different leg injuries. I'm still going to take his six on lead up to Training Camp.

I kind of agree with writer but would make one adjustment. I don't think Cooper even makes 53. Once Collins gets his feet under him at RT I think he is an upgrade over Free. It then becomes can Dallas find someone who basically gives them what Leary gave them at LG. I am placing my bet on Brown being that guy. Massive mountain of man at 6'5 340 lbs. That puts him next to massive Tyron Smith. Bell has started 72 games so he knows what to do. He has never been surrounded by talent like this before. I think what Bell gives Dallas and what Leary gave last year is a push. So when we look at sum of parts I do see the offensive line getting slightly better. This doesn't even factor Chaz Green playing a snap. If he somehow gets his body to cooperate then it starts to become gaudy how much talent & depth his line would have.

Really wish Free woulda retired before Leary left. I know there's no chance Leary would get the money Denver gave him in Dallas but it's something I think about.
