Cowboys’ Ron Leary says he ‘definitely’ is the starter over La’el Collins

Competition. Leary was perhaps perceived as the weak link, they brought in ample competition, and thus far Leary has responded just as they hoped I would bet.

This time last year we didn't know if Leary would beat Bernadeau. I think Leary has a ton of talent, but he isn't all-pro. I think Collins has a lot more ability than him, so if it is even close I'd give the nod to Collins, and work him in to get experience on the cheap and have this line mesh asap.

Agree with this assessment

Man, they are really, really trying to drum up a story here and I'm sorry, but it's just not going to happen. Ronald Leary is going to start and will remain the starter unless Collins either is Zack Martin 2.0 or Leary gets a major injury.

I like Leary's confidence. I also like Leary's play.

I think we may eventually have to trade Leary or Collins for a nice fat draft pick. I think either would fetch a pretty solid #1 or #2.

let him prove it on the field

Which brings us to La’el Collins (71) the latest 1st round-rated talent to join the OL group. Here’s a clip from Friday’s shirts-and-shorts practice which shows Collins in a volleyball drill, a new agility exercise that asks the linemen to slide laterally and roll volleyballs back to OL coach Frank Pollack. It’s one of several that require the linemen to bend their knees and stay low.

Notice Collins’ mid section. He looks absolutely skinny. He looks like an NBA power forward more than an NFL guard. Compare him to Doug Free and Zack Martin, who appear in the right background at the end of the clip. They’re girthy in their mid-sections. Collins has no gut to speak of. Yet, he lists at 6’4″, 321 as of this morning, up from his most recent weight of 315. (The Cowboys don’t ***** weights and update them constantly.)

Collins has been impressing the last few practices, looking "dominant" at times in one-on-ones. This kid wasn't considered a top -15 pick for nothing, maybe he didn't look as impressive during OTAs when they were in shorts, but he's been mauling since we put the pads on. He will crack this lineup sooner rather than later. Free is lucky Green isn't ready to go yet, he would have pushed him as well this TC.

If your name doesn't end in Smith, Frederick or Martin I wouldn't get too comfortable.

Captain obvious, I know...but if we're debating between Leary (solid, proven OLineman) and Collins (1st round talent w/ chip on shoulder) for the #5 spot, then our OLine is freakin STACKED

Annoyed with all the Collins to play LG talk, we need him to play RT.......

Why would you subject this offense to the growing pains of a rookie o-limen when you have a very good starter.

One missed twist or stunt and Romo's out.

And I really do not see Collins as that much of an upgrade, I saw what Leary did against JJ Watt last year.

This. I'm rooting for Leary.

Keep Leary as the starter until Collins is ready. If Leary plays well we can eventually trade him for a high draft pick.

Pretty sure Leary is a free agent next year so we won't be making any trade.

After watching the training camp shows on ESPN and NFLN I don't think Collins is ready to supplant anybody yet. Most times I've seen him blocking he isn't holding his blocks...Leary is better lineman right now.

Built like a Tackle, like he was, IMO.

From what little video I've seen so far, Leary and Bernadeau have looked more consistent than Collins. The OL depth this year is looking great at the guards. Weems has looked better at RT than LT, but we don't really have a good option if Smith or Free are out for very long. It was nice having Parnell as a backup. He was a decent player.
