Don't forget about Awuzie, who could be this team's best cornerback.

I think Jaylon makes a huge step in his development and recovery. I think he'll be a force this year.

I see no reason why Lawrence can't put up even better numbers. If he's not held this year, he could very well eclipse last year.

And I think Gregory is the best RDE option this team has for 2018.

Potential for these guys is through the roof!

let's see

big wins:
lee lb
dlaw de

possible big wins:
gregory de
jaylon lb
awuzie cb
williams ol

so-so: carter, lb - but he was multiyear starter

bad one: escobar

Even if he stays 100% clean from here on out, no team is going to spend a 2nd pick on a player that won't contribute for 4 years.

That's why they basically value a draft pick for the following year at almost an entire round less than the current year.

If Payton Manning had said he was going to join the Army for 4 years after college, I think all 32 teams would have considered using a 2nd round pick on him.

I prefer what they've done the last two years in the 2nd round. No gambles. Don't get cute. Just take good football players.

BTW, Jaylon Smith will not play a down in the NFL at 100%. You're getting sucked in by offseason fluff articles. His leg is permanently damaged. He'll never move the same.

Our best two second round picks may have been the last two- Chidobe Awuzie and Connor Williams; both likely starters.

The Cowboys are probably hoping against hope Gregory turns into a star and Taco Charlton breaks out, because they probably aren't tagging DeMarcus Lawrence again in 2019 and they will want to keep their cap space to secure Dak and Zeke when the time comes.

I may also be drinking the Jaylon Smith hype kool aid here, but I also remember reading where he went through a workout a couple months ago and performed better than every linebacker in the 2018 draft did at the combine.

Smith's leg may be permanently damaged, yes, but he was such an otherworldly athlete to begin with he still may end up being better than over half the other starting 'backers in this league.

At least, I hope....

7) Expectations for Jaylon Smith in Year 2?

Mickey Spagnola:
My expectations is for him to improve greatly. That might sound weird to say of a player who in his first season actually playing in the NFL after not playing any football from Jan. 1, 2016, to Sept. 10, 2017, and doing so with a foot brace to combat the drop foot he was experiencing because of damage he suffered to his peroneal nerve, but this guy finished second on the Cowboys in 2017 with 99 tackles while playing just 54.1 percent of the defensive snaps – fifth most among the front seven guys. The nerve continues to regenerate. The knee is stronger after going through major surgery to repair his torn ACL, among other things. He is moving quicker, faster, taking fewer of those baby steps to get going. Change of direction is crisp. Now the true test of what’s to come will be in Oxnard, when the pads some on.

I don’t recall DeMarcus Lawrence being a “gamble” pick. He was a pretty highly rated player coming out of college. He was drafted right about where he belonged and I don’t remember there being injury or off the field concerns.

The injuries just happened to strike after he was drafted. Which no team can predict.

that was not a gamble but a trade-up
