You were asked 2 questions which you have not answered.

1. The AFL got it's start in 1960. Here's the proof.

1959, no AFL. Notice no Cowboys either.

Now let's look at 1960. Looky there. The Cowboys and 8 new AFL teams.

Now explain away these patches. Note they all say 1960. They all say 2009. And they all say 50.

Where's the Oilers/Titans patch?

Those are some ugly patches. All joking aside, it is strange that neither the Cowboys nor the league have mentioned their 50th anniversary. AT ALL.

Very unsettling. Could they be hiding something? Or was it actually an oversight?

That would be disgusting now that I think about it.

or Vikings too
The Vikings joined the NFL in 1961, so they are one year younger than the Cowboys. They will play their 50th season next year (2010).

How old is the new Cowboy Stadium?
Well, its not one year old yet (that won't happen until twelve months have passed) but it is in its first season.

didn't realize this was such a sore subject. but i will weigh in just to say that I too am surprised at the lack of hoopla for this. I can only presume that with the new stadium, that maybe they decided celebrating the 50 in a crazy manner would be TOO much hoopla for one season? Only a guess, but again, I'm surprised at the lack of attention to this. At least thus far.

I think you hit the nail on the head!

If any of you have seen the new Cowboys catalog, what do you see featured prominently? Why the new stadium, of course. There isn't a single t-shirt, hat or piece of memorabilia listed that says anything about this being the Cowboys 50th season. I suppose its possible that Jerry has unannounced plans to celebrate the Cowboys' 50th anniversary in 2010, but I think he's really missing a marketing opportunity by ignoring the 50th season.

And that is totally unlike the Jerry we all know and love . . .

This is year 1. Like I told you last time, they don't wait one year to start playing. You don't start at 0. You start at 1.

Either you will finally get it or you won't.

Take the bet I offered in the last post. Surely you'd like a thousand dollars of my money.

How old is the stadium?
It would be a simple single number not a verbose exposition.

The country celebrates it's birthday July 4 - not the entire year. The celebration is for the season so the fans can participate and purchase merchandise.

I agreed this is the going to start the 50th season not the anniversary (birthday) of the team. The 25 star patch is the Silver Season but the birth date of the franchise is a specific date.

We will have to agree to disagree - too bad you can't simply do it without snippy commentary.

I'm sure we can agree we all want the season to end NEXT YEAR February 7, 2010.

You can play semantics with season and anniversary all you want. Please explain to me why the AFL Patch has the word anniversary on it. The fact of the matter remains that the entire AFL is honoring 50 years and the entire AFL started the exact same year of 1960 as the Cowboys.

Please note that these 8 franchises are celebrating an entire year and not a single day. Your segue things about age are irelevant. Completely useless in the conversation. The fact remains 1984 the entire season was a celebration of 25 years and called the Silver Anniversary. By your logic that is impossible.

I have been told by a member of the Cowboys that we will have a patch in 2010, not for the comical math problem that you have with this (I apologize for the continued snippy comments) but rather because the NFL chooses to give the AFL a season of special recognition. That's right, though the Cowboys, the flagship franchise of the NFL as far as ratings and support, got started the exact same year as the 8 AFL teams who will have patches this year, the Cowboys may not be allowed to by the very same NFL.

Now he says he is not sure and that this may change. But for right now, the only reason we do not have a patch too is because the NFL wants to singly honor the AFL for 50 years. IMO that sucks.

Just because the NFL does something - does make it logical, NFL refs can attest to this.

Simply because anniversary and season is together does not make sense. It is marketing, to sell merchandise. A genreal example would be this - The country was not 200 years old July 5, 1975.

You claim my logic is comical, in fact my logic is MORE accurate.

By definition an anniversary is a specific date.

An anniversary (from the Latin anniversarius, from the words for year and to turn, meaning (re)turning yearly; known in English since c. 1230) is a day that commemorates and/or celebrates a past event that occurred on the same day of the year as the initial event. For example, the first event is the initial occurrence

Blah blah balh.

9 teams started in 1960 and 8 of them are celebrating a 50th anniversary season. It really isn't as hard as you are making it.

Hey Hos. Since the NFL is only celebrating the AFLs 50th this season, I think the Vikings should be forced to wait till 2011 to celebrate their 50th anniversary so that the Cowboys can have the 2010 season all to themselves.

I am like you, I think it is totally crappy that the NFL wants to celebrate its "legacy" season by leaving out the Cowboys:mad:

I hope saner minds can convince the NFL it is a bad idea.

Wow, I can't believe this has stirred such debate.

The 2009 season is the 50th season for the Cowboys and the original eight AFL franchises. It is not their 50th anniversary, despite what is on some patches. Your first anniversary doesn't occur until after you've been married for one year. So the 50th anniversary won't occur until 50 seasons have passed.

Yes, it may be semantics, but words have meaning and should be used as defined. Calling the 2009 season an "anniversary" is sloppy and incorrect usage, but really, what does it matter?

My only concern is that the Cowboys, other than celebrating their new stadium, appear to be ignoring their 50th season. I really doubt the NFL told Dallas to not celebrate their 50th season this year, and given Jerry's penchant for tweaking the NFL's nose, even if they did, why would he listen to them?
