I have been told by a member of the Cowboys that we will have a patch in 2010, not for the comical math problem that you have with this (I apologize for the continued snippy comments) but rather because the NFL chooses to give the AFL a season of special recognition.

Absurd, if true. In 1984, we and the other AFC "legacy" teams sported patches. There was no "competition" or glory hogging. All I know is, next year's patch better not have a "50" on it.

If I understand it, and you don't, then it's instantly worthy of debate.

Since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, that means that, in 1975, the U.S. marked it's 200th year as a nation. We didn't celebrate until the next year, though. Some of you may be old enough to remember the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. It would have been hard to get people excited about a bicentennial in 1975.

This season will be the Cowboys' 50th. That makes it our Semicentennial Season. If we don't make the playoffs, we will have experienced our tredecennial non-playoff season, without even realizing it all along.

I agree, it is absurd.

I actually put an old friend on the media scent. I told Dale it would be a good angle to push for an article.

The 2009 season is the 50th season for the Cowboys and the original eight AFL franchises. It is not their 50th anniversary, despite what is on some patches. Your first anniversary doesn't occur until after you've been married for one year. So the 50th anniversary won't occur until 50 seasons have passed.

Yes, it may be semantics, but words have meaning and should be used as defined. Calling the 2009 season an "anniversary" is sloppy and incorrect usage, but really, what does it matter?

My only concern is that the Cowboys, other than celebrating their new stadium, appear to be ignoring their 50th season. I really doubt the NFL told Dallas to not celebrate their 50th season this year, and given Jerry's penchant for tweaking the NFL's nose, even if they did, why would he listen to them?

This is correct. That said, celebrating your 50th season makes more sense than celebrating your 50th anniversary. So the Cowboys should be wearing patches this year regardless.

How old is the stadium?
It would be a simple single number not a verbose exposition.

So are you celebrating the new stadium's 1st season next year..or this year?

Moving the last few posts is one thing, but a note to that effect would have been nice . . .

Again, for those who haven't been paying attention. The 50th season, Ring of Honor, Star and Tom Landry statue will all be part of the home opener. Why didn't this all happen during the preseason? Either because the stadium is not finished yet or because Jerry wants to make a huge deal in front of probably the largest TV audience of the season at that point. He know the lovers and the haters of his team will be tuning in.

I'm subscribed to this thread -- I got two notices last nite that replies had been made in this thread; when I clicked them, the replies were there.

This morning, the replies were gone. But I notice the same two posts had been made at the beginning of yet another thread about the Cowboys' 50th season.

Maybe the authors deleted and reposted them . . .
