Is this new or something I have missed over the last few days?

Just heard Mort mention this on SC.

Former NFL coach Dan Reeves has been in discussions with the Dallas Cowboys about a consultant's role, according to sources.

Reeves recently interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers about the offensive coordinator's job but a 49ers source said Monday that Reeves informed them he likely would be taking a consultant position with the Cowboys.

Reeves could not be reached for comment. A Cowboys spokesman said he had no information about Reeves joining the organization.

Reeves, 65, has a history as a former player and assistant coach under Tom Landry. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips also has served under Reeves previously as a defensive coordinator in both Denver and Atlanta.

In his postseason press conference after the Cowboys had a disappointing finish amidst controversy, Phillips said he would change his coaching methodology. He mentioned that he wanted to consult with veteran coaches like Reeves and Marty Schottenheimer about his leadership approach for the 2009 season.

However, sources said that Reeves has discussed a more significant role with the Cowboys as a paid consultant.

If Reeves joins the Cowboys in some capacity, he also would be reunited with his son-in-law, Joe DeCamillis, who was hired earlier this month as the team's special teams coach.

Senior analyst Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Finally some positivity around our team. I think this would be a great hire. The "Accountability Process" has begun, but in light of some recent things, let's see if it can continue.

Full time or just for training camp like Parcells used to do with Coughlin and Burt and Banks and people with no Cowboy connections that shortly went on to be coaches with insider first hand knowledge of Dallas?

Not exciting news. The game has passed him by. He should stay retired he's being considered as a consultant.

things come and go in cycles. it's time we cycled to a good work ethic. he can definately help do that.

but bad work ethics are going to have to go as well.

If it's true he's turning down the 49ers OC job for this, it'd have to be full-time.

if just for camp i doubt he'd turn down a OC position.

I laffed.

You're right though.

Question is, would RJ listen to a bumkin like Reeves? ;)

Seriously, this would be a GREAT move. Love it. Not only does Reeves know his stuff, he'd be a "Wade guy" and there'd be no question about his loyalties.

Yes. Usually it is great to have a consultant standing over your coaching staff ... waiting like a vulture ...

Reeves is the closest thing to Landry in the modern world, the last vestige of Landry coaching on planet earth.

If this is true, Owens is gone.

I guess a number of people on this board can dance, since they think this move will win the team more games somehow.

possibly. if Wade fails next season to get this team to the Super Bowl 44, chance Reeves could be next HC if he wanted to.

He's too old. Im not so sure he still has it in him to handle this batch. Would be wonderful to see it work.

Hell yes this would be a great move. Dan Reeves is somebody that gets respect and will be no puppet (that will make the anti-Jerry crowd happy).

The first thing Reeves can do is slap Cupcake upside the head and ask him "what the hell are you doing practicing with no pads on"???

The second thing Reeves can do is slap Tecmo upside the head and ask him "what the hell are you doing calling 30 yard pass plays every down"???

Do it Jerry, at least get somebody in here that knows what the hell is going on.
