There is nothing wrong with Carr as a #2 CB. He's a good player. He's getting paid too much but that's how it goes when you give a big FA deal.

He's not good. Zero picks in two seasons isn't "good". Giving up like 300 yards in one game to one receiver doesn't make you "good". Being famous for being posterized doesn't make you "good". I don't know that he's even average.

That 300 is on the DC. Zero picks isn't the best but tell me what DB thrives when there is so little pass rush?

He's not a fan favorite, but this has always been more about getting him to take a pay cut than it has been about replacing him. But we need to be in position to play without him in a pinch before we can expect him to take a pay cut.

$5-6MM a year still seems steep for Brandon Carr, though. I was thinking ~$4.5MM or so, based on the signings we've seen the first few weeks of free agency.

The point of the above, was that the entire defense was lacking...not just a single player or section snap shot. The Cowboys also didn't have Romo, Bryant, and Scandrick. Care to include in the description above with reasonable associations as well?

This is a perfect summation of Carr's situation. But it appears some posters have taken his salary personally.

He's a #2 at #1 money and #1 assignments (against opp WR).

This has been the case for more than 2 years.

Spending 50M on a #2 CB, which is hit against the FO, and then that FO giving up a draft bounty for a oft-injured, borderline handicapped player as a #2, coupled with a RB playing FS and Glacier Church at the other, it is personal to be insulted with that as an NFL secondary

it is just sad that we are stuck with carr because the cowboys cannot find a replacement who actually wants to sign here. robinson would have been good at half the price but he did not want to sign here.

You do know LBs lead this team in INTs most every year? It isnt all on the pass rush, the DBs cant catch (think Atlanta, NY, NO, games etc.).

Just from time in Marinelli's defense and together, the current is even better than last season. Add in Scandrick to this year's group, and things improved significantly. Just as with an offensive line, production improves with unit time together.

Why eat dead money? Keep him, and maybe with FA looming next year for him he plays for a contract this year.

$13.8M is a lot of money for a corner that had 0 interceptions, 0 forced fumbles over the past 2 years.

That's top 5 CB money.

Unfortunately, because the Cowboys have been kicking the can with restructures, there is good chance they'll pay Carr that $13.8M for another season of mediocre play.

Now, it would be a move of loyalty for Carr to have his agent offer to renegotiate an extended contract, that then would project, with incentives, the reality of his current position with the team.

Yeah, and I saw in 2013 when we had a pass rush our DBs had 10 picks. The previous year, DBs had all but one of our picks ... again we had a pass rush then. BTW, Carr had 6 picks those two years.

And the piece about LBs leading the team with picks is a bit of a red herring. Carter had 5 in 2014, Lee had 4 in 2013, and Lee tied with Newman in 2011 (both had 4). Those are the three years in the last 6 seasons that we've had an LB lead the team.

And honestly, when you've got an LB getting 4 or 5 picks, you need to see that as a good thing. Only about 20-30 guys each year get four or more picks - maybe 2 or 3 of those guys are LBs. That's just outstanding LB play. Says nothing about our DBs

I think the better option would be to move on to a cheaper, younger option at CB.

Draft a corner on day 2, if a good one falls to our pick(s) and groom him to be the replacement.

That's an option but one has to fall and cb's don't usually fall

Carr absolutely has to take a pay cut or be released, it's a matter of principle at this point.

If he's playing on his full salary and so is Church, our front office is, for the lack of a better term, really stupid.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet but having the songbird Broaddus come out and speak about how totally important Carr is to this defense is funny. He's an average CB who stays healthy. He's a good guy in the community but he's not some crazy talented CB that is essential for any defense.

Agreed. Secondary levels of play making is a definite plus.

“[Carr], like everyone on our defense, we would like them to be more impactful, more productive,” Garrett said, via ESPN.com. “We need to take the ball away more. Two years we were among the best teams in the NFL doing that. … Brandon has to improve but everybody across our defense has to improve. He has been a steady player for us. He has been a productive player for us at times. It’s a valuable position. And he has done a good job covering guys at very challenging spot throughout his time with the Cowboys. Last year he dealt with an injury, a shoulder. He dealt with it throughout the year. So at times, he probably wasn’t playing his best. But he was out there. He was a guy who showed up every day, who showed up every week. We feel good about what he is all about.”
