Cowboys Camp Battle: Running Back Depth Chart Turned Upside Down

Alfred Morris has surprised with his all-around prowess. - Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar face a serious challenge for their jobs from the new backs.

Prior to free agency, the Dallas Cowboys were down to only two running backs. Darren McFadden had resurrected his career with a 1,000 yard season, one of the very few bright spots in an otherwise dismal offensive performance for the year. Lance Dunbar was recovering from an injury that cut short a very promising start to his season. One other RB,Rod Smith, was being converted to fullback. But after the first week of training camp, an entirely new set of names now top the depth chart - and they look very good indeed.

The Cowboys addressed the position in free agency by signing Alfred Morris, who had seen his production decline steadily over the past few seasons.

Word is Alfred Morris looks faster and did some great work on the goal line drills. Great pickup for the Cowboys. Might be one of the best underrated signings. Hope he gets his carries.

The way the Cowboys managed the RBs is the opposite of how they addressed the qb group

Jackson is already showing solid evidence of being even more than the team had ever hoped for. He not only is showing he's highly capable of doing what Dunbar had previously but additionally, is displaying 3-down ability as a runner. It's also being said that he might well make it quite difficult for Dunbar to reclaim his spot at RB. Of course, it's early yet and the awarding of that position still hinges upon further evidence.

Rooting for Jackson.. He sounds pretty intelligent in interviews as well.

Yes and with exceptional speed to boot. Maybe more instances of this good news might eventually help to quiet some of the ongoing talk that we don't draft well in the later rounds. It would seem it's definitely high time for that sorry label to be disproven.

This was developed into such a positional group of strength...you go, Cowboys.

Too bad other areas of the team don't have the depth we have at RB.

They love Dunbar so I can't see him going anywhere. Regardless if the others are better. We stick to our own....

Morris may have been one of those guys who got a little too bulky when the expectation of being an every down back was thrown on him. If he can shed a little weight, he might be able to regain some of his rookie season magic.

Hopefully nobody takes him when he goes on the PS

We stick to our own? Is Jackson not a player we drafted therefore making him our own

Remains to be seen. In the meantime, there's a growing list of those who seem willing to claim otherwise. He continues to shine while Dunbar sits.
