If the Cowboys restructure the following, they would be 21.5M under the cap:
Carr
Witten
Free
Ware
Orton

If Ware and Orton were cut the 21.5M would be reduced to about 19M.
They can gain 5.5M by making Austin a June 1st cut.

The total would be 27M under the cap.

Considering the rule of 51 and a 5% increase from the contracts for 2013 draft pick, it will require about 2M of cap space to sign all draft picks. This is usually done after June 1st.

Obviously, they wouldn't spend it all on free agents because they have to consider the future cap ramifications and the need to re-sign their own players like Dez and Tyron.

Considering that the 1st year cap hit of Carr's 50M contract was 3.2M, the Cowboys could do anything they want to do in free agency and fit it under the 2014 cap.

I think if the needed it they would do Carr and Witten. Ware is a given

If they wanted to do anything with Carr in particular, I think they would have done it already.

I think they want to keep Carr where he is because they want to get his cap hit out of the way so they have the flexibility to cut him next year.

Why would the Cowboys restructure any of those players when they really don't have to? Plus, I thought Free re-did his contract last year to a 2-yr agreement meaning that this is his final year. Orton might be retiring. I wouldn't even consider restructuring Ware. Paycut or cut. Only Carr's contract is saving him from being cut right now. That is how bad his play was last year. I'm not restructuring some guy who might be cut next year.

It is not like I have some burning desire to get FAs right now. We don't need to overpay right now. Just wait and let the draft and FA come to us.

Why not just cut orton? Why have a old starting qb and a even older back up qb? That's not how u develop QB's lol. We should have a young guy backing up Romo.

I think the Cowboys are holding Carr contract in their back pocket. If there is a FA they really want, but the contract puts them over the cap, they will restructure Carr to make it work. If no FA exists, they will leave Carr contract alone, which I think is for the best.
