Cowboys can't get the Secondary right

McCarthy has not run a draft in his life. All of the picks while he was with the Packers were done by Ted Thompson, and Brian Gutekunst for one year. It's hard to know what his philosophy was on players because he had very little say in who was selected.

Also, Mccarthy's defense never really was "his" defense, it was Dom Capers'.

Didnt he say something to the effect that we were going to score alot of points, and the defense is just going to have to be good enough?
Right after he was hired he was talking about fixing the defense. But yes, he did say the defense will have to just be good enough. So I guess he went from us being the '85 Bears to us being Dallas in the 90's.

Donovan Wilson Round 6 2019
Xavier Woods Round 6 2017
Kavon Frasier Round 6 2016
JJ Wilcox Round 3 2013
Matt Johnson Round 4 2012
Akwasi Owusu Ansah Round 4 2010
Mike Hamlin Round 5 2009
Stephen Hodge Round 6 2009
Pat Watkins Round 5 2006
Justin Beriault Round 6 2005

THIS is a list of safeties DRAFTED by this front office in the last FIFTEEN years....

And we wonder why our secondary is constantly terrible.

We wasted a lot of time trying to find Kris Richards type of DB. Especially last draft.

I don't get what you mean? He was only here for 2 years, and every corner and safety that started or was subbed in was from before his time here.

2018, his first year here they drafted 0 secondary players.
2019, they drafted two in day 3. 5th and 6th rounds.
One was a corner, the other was a safety.

Starting corners were from 2015, 2016 and 2017 drafts.
Starting safeties were from 2013 UDFA, and 2017 draft.

They really didn't spend any real assets on defensive back while Richard was here.

How many corners and safeties did we draft while he was here that were supposed to be his type of DB that didnt even make the team is the question

It's still a team sport and the better the pass rush the better the secondary.

Bring in a impact DE, cover corner and ball hawk safety and the Cowboys are good.

Gee, isn't that what we have been saying in here for years?

Isn't every team trying to do that though? And there is that thing call a cap that always gets in the way.

There have been holes Dallas has had to fill and you cannot pay every position not to mention we are paying Dlaw 20 mil a season as a DE

They did look to trade for Jamal Adams last year but asking price was too high or is it filling these positions at any cost?

And our best safety in recent years was arguably Barry Church who was undrafted.

A good/great Dline makes everyone else behind them look that much better.

You can have a great secondary but if your dline gets no penetration the opponent is going to expose the secondary

In two years they drafted one corner and one safety.
The safety made the team, the corner didn't but was poached from our PS.

Both secondary guys were taken day 3. So, it's not like it was a repeat of 2012 where they spent #1 CB money on a free agent corner in Carr and then traded up for Mo to work in Rob Ryans defense.
Richard, for the most part, worked with what was given to him. And, under his watch Jones became a very good corner after being an average safety.

Just look at the Kansas City Chiefs, They added Honey Badger Mathieu and drafted Juan Thornhill after they lost to the Patriots the year before, and Voila, Super Bowl.
Their defense wasn't the reason the Chiefs had a Super Bowl winning team last season.

I frankly don't care what every other team is trying to do. The salary cap didn't prevent the Cowboys from signing FA's last year. They were millions under and simply chose not to sign more players.

He was given what he asked for. Seemed like more of his type of DBs were brought into camp than 2. However, I could be wrong. What ever the case may be he definitely taught the scheme over teaching the players.....coaching the players

It's the chicken or the egg debate.

A great secondary can buy a defensive line more time to get to the quarterback because he has to hold the ball longer than he likes due to everyone being covered.

It is, like you said, the more popular belief that the d line pressures force the throw early and help out the secondary, but that stems from the long-standing motto that team building starts up front.

The truth is in between. What we've seen the last few years is that a vanilla scheme with outdated philosophies, will get you beat, especially on critical downs. How many times last year did you watch teams convert important third downs on Chidobe Awuzie or Anthony Brown, with the safety nowhere in sight?

Maybe if he was allowed to select his own grocery's he could have cooked up a few more SB's. :lmao:

The Cowboys haven't got the secondary right but that doesn't mean they can't get the secondary right. I believe if they keep trying to improve it they will eventually find the right combination of players. I know it's exhausting waiting for that to happen and I don't blame those that grow frustrated. Keep the faith Cowboys fans and be patient. These new coaching hires give me hope that they are on the right path to correcting much that we have all noted to be wrong in the past.

Plus can't fix it all in one year. So far this off-season, seems the emphasis is on the DL. So can the draft be DB / LB oriented, or one this year, and one the next. Just depends how the draft falls too. Still they are in position to go BPA regardless of position.

Doesnt anyone realize why they cant get the secondary wright?
Its because they cant focus a draft on it. They wanna jump around and wait till the last second to get someone.
Woods, Awuzie and Lewis are all about to be FA.
This draft has some really good players foe the secondary.
Draft the secondary all threw the draft get 3 CBs and a S.period

what big free agent signings did we have last year? I must have missed that. We signed bigger names this season (Poe & McCoy)

We paid Tank to be that man. He’s not delivering. He needs to earn his paycheck this season.
