Cowboys Centers (Biadasz & Farniok) vs Broncos

Hard to judge OL versus different tiers of opponents. Especially, if it is versus actual NFL players and then backups who wont make the team as in these clips.
Tyler needs to be better. He is somewhere south of average and that must be cleaned up by the end of the season.
But he is the age where big jumps happen.

Farniok looks promising as a young interior back up.

Again, I caution folks from reading too much into pre-season where the pre-season MVP often becomes a fan fave then gets cut.

The Cowboys held out 35% of their final roster. Basically, anyone who is a returning and entrenched starter was held out.
Dallas has had zero interest in pre-season for about 3 years now after seeing some guys get injured in MM's first pre-season.
Now it's bubble wrap for all and in a long season I think that's probably smart.

Based on that I should place bets on Farniok getting the job.

I thought only I felt this way. Its' strange because I absolutely love that a former scout is covering the team but I absolutely am confused by his track record and takes.

I wanted to fact check myself to see if I'm crazy and welp... the first "bryan broaddus says" result on google is him saying Dak Prescott has to prove he deserves his next contract from 2018.
So basically he agreed with the dumbest Stephen Jones take ever and the one that has cost Dallas at least 10M a season in cap cash.
That take is and always was just so illogical and goofy it is hard to respect any football person who has it.

Steele, McGovern and Biadasz started against the Broncos. They played all of the 1st quarter and some into the 2nd. Farniok came in for Biadasz while rookie Tyler Smith came in at Left Guard, all while McGovern and Steele stayed in throughout the 2nd quarter. They all went up against a mix of starters and backups from the Broncos. It was a fair test for everyone. What mistakes or accomplishments were achieved were fair and solid assessment.

As far as assuming Biadasz has the starting role cemented, I remind you of the pre-draft press conference where both Stephen Jones and Coach McCarthy said at length that Farniok would definitely be getting a mix of starting reps and opportunities throughout training camp and preseason. We've seen some of that so far in camp, so I wouldn't believe Biadasz has the starting gig in the bag just yet. Against Denver, Biadasz made several mistakes while Farniok was flawless. Overall, they both played good, but one could see who ultimately performed better simply by watching the tape on them.

Why can't Farniok win the job? Biadasz made several bad mistakes once again against Denver. He played good at times but also made some mistakes. Plus, he struggles against power bullrushers and is slow trying to get mid level into the LBs. Farniok is more athletic, more mobile and more efficient. The tape doesn't lie.

My big prediction some months ago was that he would.

Probably a semantics thing. Didn't mean that Farinok couldn't be the starting center. But it's probably going to take more than playing well to have that happen....it's going to have to be combined with Biadasz playing poorly since he is considered the starter.

Maybe I'm just scorned by so much time of the Garrett way....the starters are the starters and that's that....but I'm still not sure this staff considers center an open competition.

Again, I dont care WHO the center is, but I'd like to see slightly better than what went on last year, be that Farinok or Biadasz becoming a little stronger and more consistent.

We have, and have had, an issue at center since Fred-beard left. Biadasz hasn't progressed well, that's why they've brought in 3 more guys in the last 2 years. It doesn't look like it's helped, yet.
Ball is a disaster. Jerry said we have our swing tackle after he drafted Waletzko, he must have known Ball looks bad. Hurry back Matt
Smith looks like he's going to end up being a great pick.

Yes, TB has taken every snap at Center, yet Stephen and McCarthy both verified to the media how Farniok would be alternating 1st team reps in camp, which he has. Judging by this thread's tape and the same game's full tape (YouTube), Farniok was flawless while Biadasz made some mistakes. If Biadasz keeps committing costly mistakes, don't be surprised on a switch.

Farniok just looked the part. I like his power at the point. Tyler B. just gets manhandled 2 much at times. Right now the nod goes 2 Farniok. Im anxious to see game 2 this weekend.

Per Broaddus, there is no real competition at starting center. i tend to believe it.
At anything, Cowboys may be preparing Farniok as a utility emergency backup center.

- And i'm not sold on Biadasz at all. There seem to be a couple of instances where he either fail to pick up the man lined over him,
His man that lined up right over Biadasz, was in the backfield, " untouched" so fast, that i couldn't see how it needed to be Tyler to pick him up instead.

- That Bronco had too much of a direct str8 line shot at the QB.

We have an average and just decent starting center, and i'm starting to believe that's just one of the problems, it may not be THE leading problem,
but it's one that continues to limit us, imo.

When folks were blaming McGovern for everything, I tried to tell them that TB was the player defenses were targeting. They would have one player attack a shoulder and he would fail to handle it very well often leaving McG in a bad spot.

It's nice that you pointed out the same tendency.

In this video highlight, Voch Lombardi talks about rookie Left Guard Tyler Smith, but it's a good video that shows an equal amount of highlight plays of both Tyler Biadasz (#63) and Matt Farniok (#68) at Center against the Broncos.

Keep an eye on them and see who you think performed better between the two of them? (Please answer the POLL included in this thread) Granted, it's only a few plays, but it's all that's available in this video.

It was stupid to pass on drafting the top rated center in the draft but at least they got another offensive lineman instead. It doesn't appear that they value the center position that much, I would argue it's every bit as important as left tackle.

Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy VL. I couldn't stop watching the terribleness of Rush. Does he ever slide in the pocket to buy a second or 2? Guy is ALWAYS on his back foot. Just awful.

He is strong and athletic but his penalty issues are following him to NFL. We complained about Penalty Williams. We may have replaced him with Even-More-Penalty Smith.....

Penalties are like 1 step forward 2 step back. It quickly negates any good you have done

Most all rooks have penalty issues before they get used to the NFL game and iron out technical issues. Might want to hold off on those premature evaluations!!!!

There are (and have been) solid Pro Bowl finesse type centers who are not a Brutus ,..Packers in the past have had those types.
What they do not possess in top tier physical ability and sheer strength, they make up in great positioning, technique and celebral IQ and knack for the game.

With Biadasz, i wonder how he grades out in those areas, ..vs pass, ..vs the run, stunt-twists, overload blitzing, when to single up, ..when to pick up... when and where to help out
with double teams. how is he when it comes to executing assignments (no whiffs, or blown signal calls, no low snap knuckle-ball shot-gun snaps..etc.

I'm more on the side that says upgrade over him. But i'm also on the side that wants to upgrade at OL line coach first .. and then

I thought that it was generally understood that teams don't blitz in the preseason. How can you evaluate a D-lineman when you give him the advantage of an extra pass rusher for the offense to contend with? These preseason games are usually not gameplanned by coaches.

When a team blitzes during a preseason game it kind of tells me that winning that game has some type of value to him. I would theorize that this happened most often by new head coaches that want to impress fans. That new head coach is obviously there because the old head coach wasn't winning enough.

Or they're working on some D plays.
