Why Dallas didn't trade for No. 2 pick

Posted: Wednesday May 09, 2007 08:02AM ET

Word is Detroit's Matt Millen wanted a king's ransom that included Cowboys Pro Bowl linebacker Demarcus Ware for the No. 2 pick and the chance to draft Calvin Johnson. The Cowboys thought about it but then decided -- as they should have -- not to pursue the deal. Ware is too valuable and with Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, there wasn't a pressing need this season to add a wideout.

This is pretty much old news. It was originally reported that they wanted Ware, our first this year AND our first next year IIRC.

I hope JJ and WP laughed their arses off when Millen asked for that and then hung the phone up.

I would've screamed if they gave away Ware and two 1st rounders for Calvin Johnson or anybody else. I'm glad they thought better of it.

My only hope is that the thought about it consisted of 3 minutes of uncontrollable laughter, followed by a gasping, "You gotta be Fing kidding!"

Per Jerry Jones it was never a serious option, though they did listen.

I thought Calvin Johnson was the one person in this draft worth trading up for. I think he is going to be the best player of this whole draft class and will be a major star.

He wasn't worth what Detroit wanted. They must think that we are as crazy as they are.

It's only prudent to consider all options for improving the team .... and then rejecting the more outlandish ones.

it wasn't just "D-Ware" like the headline implies. some pretty important details are missing here...

There are some deals that require no thought at all. Ware is arguably one of two players we dare not let go- the other being Romo. And frankly, Ware is more valuable. He isgoing into his third season and already is an elite OLB, and on the verge of becoming one of the top 3 pass rushers in the league. He already is top 10.

Outlandish is the word here; D-Ware is worth alot to start with, but not doubt that idiot Millen would have wanted future or present-year picks (Although I don't blame him for trying) and drafting a wideout, even as talented as C. Johnson makes me nervous. I am glad he nixed th trade as I am sure he wasn't seriously considering it. (I hope)

I'd be surprised if the Cowboys took more then 2 seconds to think about it. Quite frankly if we traded Demarcus Ware for anyone, Jerry Jones should just forget any idea of us winning the SB and sell the team. W/o Ware we don't have a shot at becoming a legit SB contender.

As much as i like ware and can't imagine trading him, if i was the GM or the head coach of a professional football team i would consider every single offer that is available to me. Obviously in order to trade a player like Ware i better be getting something really really really good in return. Right now, I wouldn't trade ware for C. Johnson straight up much less the number of draft picks Detroit wanted in addition. Nice try though!

If Johnson ends up being the player everyone thinks he'll be, a guy who may redefine the WR position, then I'd trade a LB for him anyday, even Ware, but I wouldn't trade Ware and a #1 pick.

As great as Ware is, he's replaceable...if one really believed Calvin Johnson may be the best WR ever, or even one of the best, I make that swap.

But I know Detroit wasn't interested in a straight up swap either.

I have to disagree here. Have you forgotten our inablity to find top tier pass rusher over the last, oh i don't know...ten years? Receivers that can change the game can be had anywhere in the draft. I'll keep Ware.

:laugh2: I might consider it if Detroit swapped their 1st round pick this year (C. Johnson),for D. Ware.....If they ( Detroit)threw in their No. 1 pick next year, and the year after! See...We can look stupid too!

Naa Detroit must be crazy, Ware is a proven commodity. Who knows Johnson could blow a wheel and never be the same again...

And other reaction and I would question the sanity of those two.

I seriously hope for the sake of the franchise that they sat down and seriously discussed the offer like intelligent people rather than just going with some idiotic knee jerk reaction.
