Cowboys Considered trading D-Ware for Calvin Johnson?

Lots of DWare love....I'd still trade him straight up for Calvin Johnson if no picks were involved, which they were in the offer.

Ware is a very good LB....he's not as good as Merriman, imo, and he's definitely not making anyone forget LT.

Now that we have Spencer and see other OLB/pass rushers for the 3/4 available every year, I'd trade him for a WR that many say the NFL has never seen before.

I guess that means I know nothing about the NFL, but despite his probowl appearance, I didn't see that Ware turned our team around and helped us win a playoff game...everyone still says he NEEDS another good pass rusher on the other side, and most people recognized Ellis as putting more pressure on QB's than Ware before the injury.

Ware's a great LB....doesn't change my opinion of which player I'd choose if they were both still on the draft board and it was my turn to choose.

I see Johnson as a bigger, more physical Randy Moss without the garbage. And yes, he was a difference maker to the franchise in Minny for several years despite his attitude.

I just think a top passrusher like Ware is so much more valuable than a WR, no matter how good the WR is.

IMO Ware is undervalued -- he's as good an athlete as anyone at his position in the league. And he seems to still be learning. Barring injury, he will be a DPOY candidate in this scheme.

Not to mention that while Calvin Johnson is undoubtedly a great rookie prospect, there's no guarantee whatsoever that he'll be this never-before-seen, possibly-best-ever player at his position.

I have to agree. With Ware we have a bird in the hand. IMO he's just scratching the surface of what he'll be and in 2 years may be the best in the game at getting to the passer.Like you say, potential DPOY. I don't give that up for any WR. Chad Johnson led the NFL in rec. yards. Would i trade Ware for Johnson? Heck no.

I'm glad Dallas avoided the trade and while I think Johnson will be a great asset to the Lions I doubt his talent is that great to turn Det from a bottom feeder to a championship team

For sure. If Barry Sanders couldn't do it single-handedly no one can.

Det has a lot of problems. I think Millen would have been better served taking as much as he could for the draft pick so that they could address multiple needs. Johnson may be great but I don't think any WR could take a bad team and make them great, face it WR does not touch the ball that often. Last season Andre Johnson had more catches than any WR with 103 catches yet that is still only an avg of 6 catches a game.

Mat Millen is just trying to act like a GM, nothing more. He doesn't know what he is doing.

Good for you. At least you're in the minority. You should clarify if you mean Johnson and Spencer, or Johnson and Ware in terms of your pick. Clearly the latter is the only real scenario, and it assumes we could trade up. There are always people out there ready to mortgage the future just to get their one special player.

Did you notice that Detroit didn't convince anyone else of the need to jump to take Johnson either? Does that tell you anything?

Have you forgotten about the two #1's next year? There's plenty of time to get the WR if the need is great enough.

We'll see just how hot Merriman is post-roids. If he's not the fo'shizzle, what will your argument be then?

Keep in mind if he's so stupid, you might want to keep him close rather than shut him out. Stupid runs many ways -- here it was asking for way too much -- in the future you might see him ask way too little.

It tells me that the price of acquiring the Lions' #2 would've been much more than most teams would've surrendered. However, I am glad that Dallas did not involve Ware in any trade transactions. Whichever side of the defense he lines up, that side is fixed. With Spencer onboard, I'm confident the side opposite of Ware will also be fixed.

Let me ask this -- if we were sitting there are #2 wouldn't you expect the team to throw out "blow us away" type trade proposals?

Certainly, but in this case involving Ware, I'm happy that we were not in the Lions' position.

That is what the Lions asked for. And from what I heard Jerry say, or the way I took it it. It was a NO, not even considered.
But some dumb arse reporter needs to put his crap spin on it to sell his article.

I don't buy that they considered it.
